UK Based, South African singer-songwriter Cara Frew has released the video for her track “Weightless”. The song which was recently synced to ABC’s hit US TV show Pretty Little Liars, is a mix of gritty pop vocals with the perfect infusion of down-tempo melody and an effortless instrumental base that gives us a feeling that soars. Weightless delivers a whimsical, transporting slice of sound to get us through the winter months.
Cara Frew explains “Weightless”
“With Amy Winehouse and Lana del Rey as a couple of my favourite artists, I was beyond excited to write “Weightless” while in Los Angeles with Stefan Skarbek, who worked closely with Amy up until the end, and have it produced by Daniel Heath who composed most of Lana’s “Born to Die” album.”
Along with the rest of the world, Cara Frew has been longing for connection during a year unlike any other. With Daniel Heath’s cinematic production approach, Weightless transports us to that floating feeling of elevated love, the beauty of mixed emotions gone wild, an absorbing lust in a chaotic world, and the comfort we find in each other despite how imperfect we know our love is. It’s the perfect escape.
Cara Frew comments on focusing her emotions
“Constant growth and evolution are an integral part of my life and I have used this uncertain time to focus my emotions into creativity. I cannot wait to share my music with you and follow it up with an EP that will be released later this year.”
The video was shot by SA talent Ross Hillier in the Newlands Forest in Cape Town on a misty and magical day with sunlight creeping through the tree canopies and water as cold as ice.
Cara comments on making the video for “Weightless”
“I am lucky I did not freeze to death! We were going for a whimsical, floaty feeling as the story of elevated lust unfolded.”

This track and video is proof that musical talent is alive and well in South Africa. It’s such a soothing tune. It’s a pity that artists / bands / groups are not getting the support they deserve from the government.
