Making a triumphant return, GRAMMY® Award-winning and record-breaking superstar Alessia Cara is back with a new single and video for “Dead Man,” available now via Def Jam Recordings.
This release, her first since 2022, signals the beginning of what promises to be her most ambitious and dynamic era yet.
Alessia enters this new phase with unmistakable confidence and charisma. Written by Alessia Cara and produced and co-written by Mike Elizondo, the upbeat track explores the story of a once-loving relationship that has grown cold. It features a jazzy drumbeat, a catchy bassline, and a lively piano melody.
Alessia’s distinctive, smoky vocals soar over energetic horns as she sings, “If you really care, then why am I feeling you slip right through my hands? If you’re really there, why can I walk right through you? Talking to a dead man.”
Alessia Cara explains “Dead Man”
“The song is about a relationship that has reached its end, and it’s like a final attempt to hold onto what’s left. It’s like looking at the other person and metaphorically shaking them, saying, ‘I am really trying my best to hold on here, but if you don’t want to be held onto, then there’s nothing left.’ It feels like I am talking to a dead man.”
The video, directed by George Gallardo Kattah, is a surreal, David Lynch-inspired fever dream. In one of many captivating scenes, Alessia undergoes a polygraph test conducted by a ghostly, headless suit.
The video features tense close-ups, a silhouetted trumpet solo, and mesmerizing choreography, all amplifying her unique, boundary-pushing spirit.
