SA Music Zone is thrilled to have you, Cindy-Louise! Your new EP, What You Made Me, is available from the 2nd of February 2024 and looks set to continue your momentum and buzz. Can you give our readers a brief overview of what they can expect from this theatrical rock experience?
“The EP and single, ‘WHAT YOU MADE ME,’ hold immense significance for me. It beautifully weaves a narrative of pain, healing, and most importantly, acceptance. My opera training adds richness to the high, angelic notes, enhancing the overall atmosphere and theatrical elements, while the intense, notable guitars offer a perfect balance. Prepare to be profoundly moved by this shattering sensory experience.”
Cindy-Louise, your EP reflects a deep exploration of personal experiences and emotions. Can you share more about your artistic vision and creative process behind ‘What You Made Me’ and how it represents your musical evolution?
“My journey can be likened to the formation of a diamond. The transformation into the artist I am today required me to delve deep into my innermost self, despite the challenges. This experience allows me to connect with my audience on a profound level, offering solace and guidance in navigating their daily obstacles. It’s through this process that I’ve been able to create art that truly resonates from my soul.”
“Innocence” seems to have been a labour of love. Can you elaborate on the emotions and experiences that inspired the track, and how the journey of creating it unfolded over the two years?
“The composition of lyrics for ‘INNOCENCE’ was executed with ease as I had a clear understanding of my emotions, the message I wanted to deliver, and the ambiance I wanted to cultivate. The real challenge lay in the instrumentation, a hurdle I was able to overcome through listening to more and a wider variety of rock music, thereby identifying the elements I wanted to incorporate.”
“The track draws inspiration from the realization that my youthful self, brimming with hope and innocence, has been irrevocably altered. The loss of that childlike innocence and hope is something I can no longer recapture at this point in time.”
Cindy-Louise, ‘What You Made Me’ has a unique layering of musical elements. How did you go about crafting the escalating intensity and incorporating folk elements? How does the song tie into the overarching theme of transformation?
“I am excited by your recognition of the folk elements, as this aligns precisely with the direction, I aspire to take my music towards.”
“My intention was for this song to evoke the essence of a warrior’s march, akin to cinematic renditions like ‘LORD OF THE RINGS’ where folk music served as a significant inspiration to formulate those aesthetics. My ambition with my music extends beyond evoking mere feelings or emotions; I aim to create an atmosphere and an experience that transports the listener.”
Cindy-Louise, “Nothing Hurts Anymore” delves into the struggles of depression and anxiety. Can you share more about the message behind the song and how it reflects your journey in managing these challenges?
“Having personally endured both of these conditions, I can attest to the formidable challenge they present in managing and navigating daily life. Despite the ongoing struggle, I am also acutely aware of how my condition impacts those who care about me too.”
“Ultimately, the responsibility lies with me to seek help and betterment, even though I am surrounded by love and support. It is crucial to acknowledge that I often find myself engulfed in the negativity and pitfalls associated with depression and anxiety, and I am the only one who can change this feeling. I deal with these obstacles one day at a time, constantly seeking to imbue my life with purpose. This sense of purpose ignites my passion, serving as a vital catalyst in my journey.”
Cindy-Louise, collaborating with Erick Gerber, known for his work with Red Helen and the Jesse Clegg Band, must have been exciting. How did this collaboration come about, and how did it contribute to the overall sound of your recent releases?
“Erick Gerber’s exceptional guitar abilities are truly extraordinary. I was certain that I wanted the musical pieces to exude a certain sharpness and maintain a consistent tonal quality to establish a connection among them, and Erick was successful in achieving this. His contribution significantly enhances the emotional intensity of the music, enabling listeners to experience the music beyond the mere words of the lyrics.”
With the release of ‘What You Made Me,’ can fans expect live performances or a tour? How do you envision bringing the theatrical rock experience to the stage?
“Indeed, you can anticipate an engaging live performance. My schedule includes appearances at upcoming festivals and, most notably, three performances this year, in The Netherlands, Johannesburg, and Pietermaritzburg. The specific dates will be disclosed in due course. I can assure you that the experience will be enchanting and memorable.”
Cindy-Louise, from Classical and Jazz voice training to exploring various genres, including your dedicated focus on Rock from 2023, how do you see your musical style evolving, and what drives your willingness to experiment with different genres?
“I relentlessly strive and experiment until I discover the perfect fit for myself. It’s safe to say that I’m beginning to fine-tune my approach, and my unique style is becoming more distinct and identifiable, but I firmly believe that constant experimentation is the key to personal growth.”
Having received critical acclaim for your debut album ‘Humanity’ in 2020 and the success of singles like ‘Innocence’ and ‘Can’t Own Me’ in 2023, how does it feel to see your music gaining recognition on a global scale?
“The exhilarating feeling of people resonating with my art is the ultimate reward I could ever ask for.”
Cindy-Louise, you’ve mentioned the imminent launch of another full album in 2024. Can you provide a sneak peek into what your fans can anticipate from this upcoming release?
“Just think, Dark Fairy-tale.”
Cindy-Louise, your commitment to authenticity and self-expression is evident in your music. How do you hope your audience connects with ‘What You Made Me,’ and what kind of emotional journey do you wish to take them on?
“My aspiration is for my audience to perceive that they have the freedom to express their authentic selves, and to understand that they are not isolated in their experiences. Everyone has encountered similar situations in varying degrees. Music serves as a therapeutic medium to cope with life’s challenges. My goal is for my audience to acknowledge their vulnerabilities, yet also recognize their resilience and strength, despite their challenges.”
Cindy-Louise, with your diverse background and experiences, what advice do you have for aspiring musicians who are navigating the challenges of the music industry and trying to find their unique voice?
