With over a decade of performing for audiences across South Africa and Asia, Kotze has collaborated with renowned musician Jaco Mans to blend his written prose with melodic allure. Mans recorded and produced Sounds Like Words, showcasing the seamless fusion of Kotze’s words and Mans’ musical expertise.
The EP features cover art by the talented Stella Olivier, whose unwavering support encouraged Kotze to venture into recorded poetry. “Sounds Like Words” stands as a humble testament to the power of artistic collaboration and expression.
Currently based in Hanoi, Vietnam, Kobus Kotze finds inspiration in collaborating with an eclectic array of musicians and visual artists under the collective banner of a band called Free State Gothic.
The genesis of Sounds Like Words traces back to a poetic and musical performance by Kobus Kotze and his sister, Marike, set against the picturesque backdrop of Rosendal, Free State, South Africa.
Encouraged by Olivier’s support and driven by a shared vision, Kotze embarked on a brief yet impactful recording journey to share his poetic musings with a broader audience.
The EP comprises five tracks, each exploring distinct themes and presented bilingually. From the introspective “Chasing Ghosts,” pondering the inevitability of change, to the contemplative “I Believe,” inspired by the literary works of JG Ballard, “Sounds Like Words” invites listeners on an introspective journey through the labyrinthine landscapes of Kotze’s psyche.
Sounds Like Words celebrates the transformative power of art and the shared human experiences that connect us all. Kotze’s prose, harmonized with Mans’ evocative melodies, aims to resonate with listeners on a personal level, reminding us of our shared journey through life.
