Self-doubt and disillusionment: these powerful, universal emotions have inspired countless creative works. For Kathryn Georgina, a classically trained pianist and singer, they became the driving force behind her debut album, Formative—a deeply evocative reimagining of the hardcore, screamo, and post-hardcore anthems that helped shape her musical identity. The album is set to release on February 7, 2025, via Mongrel Records.
The 13th of December 2024 marked the release of her first single, Dear Youth (Day 52)—a haunting piano rendition of The Ghost Inside’s intense track. With this release, Kathryn invites listeners to uncover the raw emotion and transformative beauty hidden beneath the noise.
“Music shapes us all,” Kathryn Georgina reflects. “This album is about uncovering the beauty within the songs that molded me. These genres are often known for their intensity, but underneath that, there’s a remarkable depth and poignancy.”

Formative takes listeners on a sonic adventure, reimagining iconic tracks like Alexisonfire’s “Accidents” and Poison the Well’s “Pieces of You in Me”.
With every note, Kathryn Georgina infuses new life into these beloved classics, her piano-driven arrangements revealing the delicate melodies beneath the surface.
Drawing inspiration from Christopher O’Riley, renowned for his piano interpretations of Radiohead and Elliott Smith, Kathryn’s album offers a fresh take on the raw energy of the early 2000s post-hardcore scene.
“The message of the album is that there is beauty in everything,” Kathryn explains. “These songs hold deep personal meaning for me, and I hope this interpretation resonates with others who have found comfort in their raw intensity.”
Recorded at home on an electric piano, Formative is as intimate in its creation as it is in its sound. Engineered by her husband, Ashley De Beer, amidst the rhythm of daily life, the album stands as a testament to perseverance, vulnerability, and love.
Kathryn’s journey from self-doubt to creative expression has culminated in a profoundly emotive body of work that pushes the boundaries of genre. With “Dear Youth (Day 52)”, she sets the stage for an album that is both an homage and a reinvention.
For fans of The Ghost Inside, Alexisonfire, and anyone eager to rediscover the beauty of alternative music through a new perspective, Kathryn Georgina’s Formative promises to be an unforgettable listening experience.
