Self-doubt and disillusionment are familiar companions for many artists navigating the delicate balance of creativity. For Kathryn Georgina, a classically trained pianist and vocalist, these very emotions have driven her to share her debut album, Formative.
A heartfelt homage to the music that shaped her, Formative reimagines hardcore, screamo, and post-hardcore anthems from the 2000s in a strikingly emotive, piano-centric style.
From the haunting intensity of Alexisonfire’s “Accidents” to the ethereal melancholy of Poison the Well’s “Pieces of You in Me,” Kathryn revitalizes songs renowned for their raw power, unveiling the tender beauty beneath the noise.
“Music shapes us all,” says Kathryn. “As a starting point, it feels natural to share the influences that resonate deeply, breathing new life into classics while also highlighting the melodies in lesser-known genres.”

Inspired by the piano covers of Christopher O’Riley (Radiohead, Elliott Smith), Formative serves as both a personal journey and a gift to listeners, offering a unique perspective on the alternative music scene through Kathryn’s interpretive vision.
“The message of the album is that beauty can be found in everything,” Kathryn explains. “I hear beauty in some of the heaviest tracks, which are not usually seen as beautiful, and I’ve translated that into lyrical piano music. I feel like I’ve preserved the essence of the original tracks, but painted them in a different light, so to speak.”
The album’s creation was as raw as the music it draws from. Recorded at home on her electric piano, with her partner Ashley handling the engineering amid the interruptions of daily life, Kathryn Georgina poured emotion, frustration, and resilience into every note. “Even listening to it now, it’s such a love/hate thing,” she confesses. “But I’m learning to be kind to myself!”
For those who appreciate emotive, introspective, and transformative music, Formative by Kathryn Georgina offers a journey that is both nostalgic and inspiring – a celebration of the beauty in every chord and every scream.
