Cape Town-based DJ12inch has announced the release of his forthcoming debut album ‘SubUrban Grooves’ and has celebrated the announcement with the release of his first single ‘Dope Go Getter’.
More info about DJ12inch
Early on into his career, DJ12inch sat down behind a drum kit & created the rhythm of a legendary Cape Town sound. He, along with three others, were the seminal indie-pop band, the Dolly Rockers. He also collaborated with Jeremy de Tolly of The Dirty Skirts fame, to create Prankster. They worked with Zolani Mahola, Leboa Mashile, and Tamsin MacCarthy to make 2 albums and received 3 SAMA nominations for their work.
The DJ12inch we now meet has moved to a more thoughtful sound. Older, but still restless, he today makes his debut album ‘SubUrban Grooves’ available for pre-save and releases ‘Dope Go Getter’ as the first single from the album.
DJ12inch has somewhat been involved in the Cape Town Hip Hop scene by helping young up and coming artists to get a taste of recording in a studio and some production tips. He’s done several tracks with Amkele Mandla aka 3am Nostalgia.
DJ12inch explains how “Dope Go Getter” came about
“’Dope Go Getter’ began life as a bass part from my newly acquired Moog Sub Phatty and became a Run The Jewells style beat that Amkele laid his vocals down to. Once that was down and finessed, I thought it would sound cool as a house track – so I sped up the vocals and BOOM!”
With a full body of work due for release next month, we look at the title he selected for his debut album with ‘SubUrban Grooves’. Nearly everything associated with DJ12inch – aside from the actual music – is somewhat ironic, including the name. The genre of house and techno draws huge influence from the urban – being a married father of three and a massive dog lover is decidedly suburban. And because its deep, it’s SubUrban.
From head fillers to dance floor fillers, ‘SubUrban Grooves’ is set for release on the 17th of September and showcases DJ12inch at his versatile best with contributions from Tamsin MacCarthy (aka Circe), Amkele and Abdi Whosane.
