The Black Cat Bones Return With “Something That You Said”

Two years after the heartbreaking loss of their iconic frontman Kobus de Kock Jnr, South African rock veterans The Black Cat Bones make a poignant return with their new single, “Something That You Said”. This emotionally charged track stands as one of the most personal releases in the band’s celebrated career.

A Song of Tribute, Grief, and Celebration

Written by longtime bandmate Gareth Wilson, “Something That You Said” is more than just a song—it’s a tribute and a eulogy. Raw and soul-baring, it pays homage to a friend, a brother, and a voice that shaped the very essence of The Black Cat Bones. Through honest lyrics and a heart-wrenching soundscape, the track reflects on grief, memory, and the enduring pain of loss.

    Collaboration That Deepens the Impact

The single features a powerful collaboration with Onset Music Group, whose stirring production and soulful instrumentation amplify the track’s emotional weight. Together, they craft a sound that resonates with both intimacy and power.

The Black Cat Bones’ “Something That You Said” Speaks to a Universal Truth

While deeply personal, “Something That You Said” also touches on a universal experience—the pain of witnessing someone fade beneath the weight of depression. With its haunting melodies and vulnerable lyricism, the track offers solace to anyone who has experienced similar loss.

A Legacy of Passion and Magic

“This song is a farewell, a love letter, and hopefully, a light for others walking through the same darkness,” says Gareth Wilson. “Kobus was larger than life—his passion, his madness, his magic—and this track is a celebration of all of that.”

A Healing Moment for Fans and Band Alike

The Black Cat Bones have created more than a song—they’ve crafted a moment of healing, both for themselves and their fans. “Something That You Said” is a heartfelt tribute to a fallen brother, a reminder of the power of music to honour, to remember, and to heal.

I was fortunate enough to get to know “Rot” (AKA Kobus De Kock Jr.) in the early 2010s. I still remember the first time that I heard the sounds of The Black Cat Bones at STRAB in 2009. I was intrigued but I actually didn’t watch their whole set (I blame the Mozambican tequila for that).

Everything changed in 2011 when I watched them play at Arcade Empire in Pretoria. After that groundbreaking show, I met the band and I was transformed into one of their biggest fans.

I can’t recall every single festival that I watched The Black Cat Bones play at, but their 2014 performance at RAMFest and their 2015 performance at Oppikoppi stands out as two of the best sets that I’ve seen by a South African rock band. Rot’s energy during those sets was next level.

There are many memories from over the years, but I will never forget Rot asking me why I am checking my watch at one of the STRAB festivals I went to. I also recall getting into a deep discussion with him about the origins of “John Henry” at one of the Otterlake Easter Festivals. There was also the one time at the old JARR Bar that I was fortunate enough to celebrate my birthday during one of his solo sets.

“Something That You Said” is a great tribute to a great human. Rot, you are definitely missed. The army mannetjie in our lounge is not going anywhere.
