Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Jann Klose has released the official music video for his latest single, “When I’m With You”—a synth-rock anthem that celebrates connection, joy, and the magic of everyday moments.
What sets this video apart? It’s been brought to life entirely through stop-motion animation, using over 2,000 individual photographs captured across the streets of New York City.
Directed by Texas-born filmmaker Sam Casey, the video features Jann journeying through iconic New York landmarks like Times Square, Lincoln Center, and the High Line. Shot in just six hours, the project required Klose to move one step at a time for each frame—mimicking the old-school style of a flipbook, or as Jann puts it, a “Daumenkino” (the German word for flipbook).
“I had this idea of shooting a full-on stop-motion music video in NYC and pitched it to Sam just days after we met,” says Jann Klose. “He loved it and jumped on board immediately. It was exhausting but exhilarating, and the result is beautiful. Along the way, we engaged with random fans on the street—something that really reflects the soul of the song.”
Behind the Scenes of Jann Klose’s Video: Creativity in Motion
For director Sam Casey, it was a bold experiment. “This is the first project I’ve done using stop-motion, and it was a blast. Jann’s vision for the flipbook opening—his daumenkino—set the tone. Shooting in NYC with moving elements all around us while controlling just one or two subjects gave the video a surreal, dreamlike quality.”
Because stop-motion allows for no redos, every frame had to count. That commitment to precision gives the video a feeling of raw spontaneity grounded in craft.
Co-written with Everett Bradley (known for his work with Bon Jovi and Seal), “When I’m With You” channels an upbeat, emotionally rich sound that blends intimacy with vibrant, 80s-inspired flair. Bradley also co-produced and performed on the track, alongside Marcus Dembinski, who previously worked on Jann’s single “Surrender.”
“Now it’s an upbeat celebration with deep undertones of the human connection experience,” says Bradley. Dembinski adds, “We leaned into influences like Billy Joel, A-ha, and The B-52s, pairing them with Jann Klose’s powerhouse vocals and acoustic energy. It’s a bold, bright, and honest new sound for him.”
The final result is more than a music video—it’s a moving tribute to human connection, creativity, and the little moments that bring people together. From its spontaneous street interactions to its meticulously crafted visuals, “When I’m With You” is a reminder that joy can be found one step at a time.
