Potchefstroom seems to be the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to South African bands. Their latest export: Zebraman – a four-piece indie pop dance offering straight from the popular student town.
More info about Zebraman
Consisting of Johan Viljoen on Vocals & Guitar, Jan-Meyer Verhoef on Keyboard, Wouter Möller on Drums and Franzua ‘Zua’ van den Heever on Bass, Zebraman describes their sound as music you can dance to, drive to and vibe to: A celebration of the many different styles and textures they find around the world and in South Africa while addressing everyday topics such as freedom, love and sacrifice.
Zebraman is half zebra, half man. With zebras having black and white stripes instead of one grey coat and their colours co-existing with each other, they are an embodiment of all the different cultures within our beautiful country – the essence of what it means to be South African.
“We write music that uplifts us, and the people around us. It is music that lends itself to more than just one culture, or mindset, which is something we need in South Africa.”
Their first offering as a single is called “Green & Lovin'”. Part of a five track EP set for release later this year, the single was already written in September 2019. A song with many different sounds and qualities, it was inspired by escaping false ‘utopias’ that people tend to create for themselves, whilst only losing themselves in the process.
Featuring African percussion with hard hitting drums, clean electric guitars, crazy keyboard sounds, fat bass lines and frontman Johan’s dramatic voice – the song is exactly what Zebraman sounds like and the perfect first introduction to the band. Fans can look forward to Jan’s cheesy keyboard hooks, Zua’s fat basslines, Wouter’s afro-beats and Johan’s theatrical voice combined with lazy guitar parts.
“While we certainly identify with the single, anyone who has ever felt the need to dance and sing about choosing their own paths in life, will too.”
