Zebraman has released a brand new single for the holiday season, entitled “December”. The single comes after the release of their debut single, “Green & Lovin'”, and debut self-titled EP earlier this year.
Zebraman is four-piece indie pop dance offering straight from the popular student town of Potchefstroom and consists of Johan Viljoen on Vocals & Guitar, Jan-Meyer Verhoef on Keyboard, Wouter Möller on Drums and Franzua ‘Zua’ van den Heever on Bass. Zebraman is half zebra, half man and makes music as a celebration of the many different styles and textures they find around the world and in South Africa while addressing everyday topics such as freedom, love and sacrifice.
“December” was written in July 2020, just after they recorded their first EP. Working with poet Luan von Brandis, the song started out with only a guitar line to write lyrics around, and they could just not get the idea of the song out of their heads after hearing the guitar line.
Frontman Johan Viljoen explains “December”
“The song is about looking towards a better future. When we wrote the song in July, December seemed quite far away, and we hoped things would be back to normal. December has a type of symbolic meaning that the year has come to an end and that we could finally take a breath.”
“The song is also about how we try to make things last that we go head first into without thinking, but in December, hopefully, those feelings would be in the past and we would have made better decisions by then. The lyrics ‘We were a little bit too young, a little bit too dumb. We were going a bit too fast, had to make it last’ sums it up, and I think everyone could relate to those lyrics to an extent.”
The colourful and energetic offering to vibe and drive to, comes in a time where there is some hope of things returning back to normal. The song contains summer-like electric guitar with hard hitting drums and a fat bass, together with South African percussion elements.
Johan’s vocals tie things together with some exciting sounds coming from Jan’s keys. Fans can look forward to hearing signature Zebraman elements together with new flute sounds, fresh vocals and a song that will light your subwoofer on fire.
