Cape Town’s alternative heavyweights We Kill Cowboys are back, louder and sharper, with very little interest in playing it safe.
Their new single, “Cowboys of Doom,” features Jay Smith, vocalist of fellow Cape Town metal outfit Doomtrigger. It offers the first glimpse of their upcoming album and signals a decisive move toward a heavier, high-octane sound. This is not a subtle shift. It is a deliberate surge forward.

We Kill Cowboys Keep Evolving in Real Time
Over the years, We Kill Cowboys have built a reputation for their raw fusion of punk rock, grunge and post-hardcore, a sound driven by urgency and emotional weight. Now performing as a powerful five-piece, the band’s chemistry feels tighter and more explosive than ever.
Frontwoman Alex Muller has stepped fully into her role as lead vocalist, no longer dividing her focus between guitar and mic. The result is a grittier, more commanding vocal presence that cuts straight through the band’s dense instrumentation.
Producer and long-time collaborator Floris Le Roux joins on second guitar, adding new intensity alongside Mornay’s aggressive riff work. Andrew’s drumming lands with force and precision, while Miggs’ basslines provide the low-end foundation that keeps everything grounded when the tempo spikes.
The sound feels focused and intentional, not chaotic for the sake of it.
A Soundtrack for Friction
“Cowboys of Doom” dives into the volatile tension between society’s marginalized communities and entrenched power structures. The narrative captures frantic survival and psychological strain, framed by a refusal to bow to authority.
There is a sense of pressure throughout the track, as if the walls are closing in while resistance grows louder. It taps into themes of systemic imbalance and the emotional toll of living under that weight.
Jay Smith’s guest vocals intensify the mood even further. His contribution adds a harsher, metallic edge that amplifies the track’s confrontational energy. The vocal interplay strengthens the song’s impact without overshadowing the band’s core identity.
Setting the Stage for a Fierce New Chapter
If this single is the tone-setter, the forthcoming album promises to be uncompromising. We Kill Cowboys are already known for electrifying live performances that leave audiences rattled in the best possible way. “Cowboys of Doom” suggests the band are pushing that energy into even sharper territory on record.
There is a clear sense of purpose here. The aggression feels directed, the themes considered, and the sound refined without losing its bite.
In a crowded alternative landscape, We Kill Cowboys continue to stand out by pairing adrenaline with intent. If the rest of the album matches the intensity of this release, Cape Town’s heavy scene is about to feel the impact.
