Mad God unveil crushing new single: “Left To Rot”

South Africa’s doom metal underground just got heavier – and far more cinematic. Mad God have released their harrowing new single, “Left To Rot,” the first glimpse into their forthcoming concept album, An Age Of Ash.

It marks a decisive evolution for the trio: broader in narrative scope, richer in atmosphere, yet still crushingly heavy at its core.

If you’ve followed the band since their formation in 2014, you’ll recognise the weight. What’s new is the scale.

    Mad God

Formed by Tim Harbour (vocals and guitar), Patrick Stephansen (drums) and Tim Harrison (bass), Mad God built their early identity on a fusion of classic doom and psychedelic textures. Their previous releases, A Tale of A Sightless City (2017) and Grotesque and Inexorable (2018), leaned into themes of cosmic horror and true crime – unsettling, claustrophobic territory.

With An Age Of Ash, they step into something even more ambitious: their first full-scale concept album rooted in dark fantasy. The shift isn’t cosmetic. It’s structural. This is a world-building exercise, not just a collection of heavy tracks stitched together.

Capturing the Sound Live – No Safety Net

The album was recorded live at Helsing Studios, and that choice matters. Instead of relying on modern studio precision, the band opted to track each song in full, in a single take – no click track, no piecemeal perfectionism. The result is kinetic and organic. The songs breathe, stretch and occasionally lurch forward with a rawness that can’t be faked.

Production duties were handled by Danny Helsing, who recorded, mixed and mastered the project. His dynamic approach complements the band’s intensity, balancing atmosphere with impact. Helsing also joined Mad God as bassist in 2021, adding another layer of cohesion to their evolving sound.

The philosophy behind the album is simple: capture emotion first, polish second.

    Progressive Edges, Crushing Core

Musically, An Age Of Ash introduces progressive elements into Mad God’s heavy, hypnotic framework. The riffs remain thick and deliberate, but the arrangements stretch further than before. There’s a sense of motion beneath the weight – as if the ground itself is shifting. That tension between structure and chaos mirrors the album’s narrative.

    A Kingdom in Ruin

The story unfolds in a world where evil has been forgotten – and because it has been forgotten, it returns.

Humanity grows complacent. A kingdom fractures under an incompetent ruler manipulated by shadow forces. Ancient archfiends known as the Ynyes stir from dormancy, reclaiming dominion over a world that no longer remembers how to resist them.

At the centre of the saga stands a young woman seeking absolution, a father driven to desperate action, and a rising Chosen figure poised to confront a collapsing order. It’s mythic, tragic and unashamedly grand in scope.

Doom metal has always thrived on atmosphere. Here, it’s paired with narrative architecture.

“Left To Rot”: The Second Chapter Begins

Mad God‘s “Left To Rot” serves as the second chapter of the unfolding story. The single follows Fadden, a farmer and father whose moment of despair leads him into a deceptive pact that transforms him into something monstrous. Believing his wife Melisa and daughter Lillia have been captured, he embarks on a desperate rescue mission.

What he doesn’t know reshapes everything: only his wife has been taken. His daughter has escaped and joined a rebel resistance fighting the regime that now grips the kingdom. It’s classic tragic irony – a man trying to save his family while unknowingly accelerating his own damnation.

When Fadden finally finds Melisa, he is confronted with a horrific reality. She has been trapped in a state of endless torment, her decaying body sustained by sorcerous means to feed the life force of the Ynyes.

Hoping for forgiveness and redemption, he instead faces the weight of his betrayal as she curses his name before dying in his arms. The song captures the crushing inevitability of consequence, weaving sorrow, rage, and despair into a towering doom soundscape.

    Doom with Narrative Ambition

With An Age Of Ash, Mad God aren’t just releasing another heavy record. They’re constructing a world – one built on live energy, progressive ambition and mythic storytelling.

Doom metal often feels like staring into a void. Here, that void has characters, kingdoms and consequences. And if “Left To Rot” is any indication, the descent has only just begun.

With “Left To Rot”, Mad God deliver one of their most emotionally intense and musically expansive compositions to date. The track stands as a powerful introduction to An Age Of Ash, setting the tone for a record that promises to be their most ambitious and immersive work yet.

“Left To Rot” is available on all major digital platforms, with An Age Of Ash set for release later this year. For fans of traditional doom, progressive metal, and dark fantasy storytelling, Mad God’s new era has only just begun.
