Friday, 19 April 2024 saw the release of a brand new single from Majozi – a collaboration with Mikhaela Faye entitled “Afterglow”. The single is the 6th brand new offering from his latest album, A Great Exchange which was released in November 2023.
Majozi already started writing “Afterglow” in 2022 during a writing session with the legendary Dolf, and super talented Will Linley. After the session, he ended up taking it to Mikhaela Faye to not only feature on the song, but also produce, write, and finish the ideas and themes the writers were originally exploring.
Mikhaela is a South African singer, songwriter and producer who creates music that draws on the rigour of a Jazz degree. The Punk, Rock and Hip Hop that soundtracked her teenage years, her own explorations into electronica-fuelled dream Pop and her sensual, R&B-styled vocal contributions to a number of heavy-hitting homegrown house and hip hop tracks.
Majozi comments on the track
“I recorded the original idea for the song at Dolf’s studio, with Will Linley. Will just threw out some of the most amazing melodies and ideas that lay out the foundation of the song. After hearing what direction we could go in, we decided to take it to Mikhaela because I’ve always wanted to work with her.”
“She has the most amazing voice I’ve ever heard. She’s a really great producer and allround creative. She absolutely blew me away with all her talent.”
With both Majozi and Mikhaela being recently married at the time, the single explores the different feelings that come with realising that you have found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and how you still manage to reach deeper and different levels of love.
From there, Mikhaela added her spin to the production of the song and together with Majozi, fleshed out the theme from their new perspectives as newlyweds.
They went back and forth with the lyrics and production for a few months, and eventually got the song to a point where they both loved the sound of the single.
Majozi explains
“Besides the normal Majoziisms and shenanigans, “Afterglow” is a warm hug wrapped in a blanket of anthemic synth-pop, that will leave you in a much happier mood than before you listened to it.”
“”Afterglow” is for everybody – whether you’re hoping to find love someday, or maybe you already have and are now understanding what that feels like. Hopefully it touches you regardless of where you are in your life.”
Majozi has been selected to perform as a showcasing artist for the 2024 CMW Canadian Music Festival in June in Toronto. Now in its 42st year, the Canadian Music Week Festival is the premier annual showcasing event in Canada.
Over the years, Canadian Music Week has featured some of the top headliners in the business alongside thousands of rising new artists.
Majozi comments on being part of this
“One of my goals for this year was to play more shows overseas, and I was already so happy having shows in Dubai and London that are confirmed, but now this opportunity to perform in Canada has really blown me away! I’m so grateful. A little nervous and scared, but so grateful and excited at the same time!”
Fans can look forward to some more single releases from Majozi this year while he tours all over South Africa, a few special projects and his first ever performance in the UK at The Grace in London on 5 July 2024.
