Johannesburg based songstress Lyla Faye has released the video for her debut solo single “Take This Town”, which was produced and co-written by South African pop giants Locnville. When you hear the polished production on the song, it’s hard to believe that it was written and self-recorded in a Jozi living room during early lockdown 2020.
Lyla Faye comments on “Take This Town”
“When I wrote this track in March/April last year with Brian and Andrew, I don’t think anyone anticipated the severity of this pandemic. Optimistically, I thought things would go ‘back to normal’ by the end of the year and ‘Take This Town’ would be a great party jam to celebrate with.”
“I had to reframe the meaning of the track and improvise with a video concept that would be more fitting for the current social climate. In a time where most of us are craving a little more human connection and social interaction, I thought it would be cool to create a VR experience of the world outside, or rather, the party inside my head. Colourful. This is the way to party in 2021.”
The video was conceptualized by Lyla Faye, directed and shot by Kristen Richard and A’moure Adendorff (Kamo Productions) in Hazelwood, Pretoria.
More info about Lyla Faye
Lyla grew up in a musical family – her father was the drummer in the iconic South African band the African Jazz Pioneers, her mother the band’s manager. She took her first steps in a hotel while the band was on tour and has been marching to her own drumbeat ever since.
Her recording career began at the age of 7, when she was featured on Ed Jordan’s “Beautiful Creatures” children’s CDs, and after many years working behind-the-scenes in the industry as a session vocalist and songwriter (signed to Sony/ATV music Publishing South Africa), Lyla Faye is ready to share her own sound with the world.
In the pursuit of an authentic creative voice, this ‘bridge builder’ has come to embrace the fact that she doesn’t have to tick one box. With musical influences that span across contrasting genres (Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, Soul and Classic Hard Rock), Lyla Faye lands in a space she likes to call her own: genre-fluid with enough Pop sensibility to make you bob your head and sing along. Her dream is to break down walls and bring people together with song.
“Take This Town” is available to download / stream on Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer.
