
Francois van Coke (born Francois Badenhorst on 18 September 1980 in Brakpan, Gauteng, South Africa) is a pioneering South African singer-songwriter, best known as the charismatic frontman of the influential rock bands Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel.
Renowned for his raw vocals, powerful stage presence, and genre-defying approach, he has played a central role in shaping the landscape of Afrikaans alternative and rock music since the early 2000s.
He grew up in Brakpan and later moved to Bellville, Cape Town, where he became immersed in the local music scene.
He initially participated in Christian rock before rebelling against the status quo and co-founding Fokofpolisiekar, a band that challenged conservative norms and became a voice for a new generation of South Africans.
Francois van Coke rose to fame as the lead singer of Fokofpolisiekar, whose provocative lyrics and energetic performances made them a cultural phenomenon.
He later fronted Van Coke Kartel, further cementing his reputation as a driving force in South African rock.
Francois van Coke launched his solo career in 2015 with a self-titled debut album, featuring the hit single “Toe Vind Ek Jou” with Karen Zoid.
The song became the first Afrikaans single to top the South African iTunes Store and achieved platinum status.
Albums like Hierdie is die Lewe (2017) and Dagdrome in Suburbia (2019) and collaborative projects such as “Francois van Coke en Vriende” showcase his versatility and willingness to experiment with new sounds, including collaborations with hip-hop artists.
