Friday, 8 September 2023 saw the release of a brand new single from Potchefstroom band, Zebraman. Their brand new offering, “Into The Night” – comes after the release of their previous single, “Hate Love” earlier this year.
“Into The Night” was written in 2022 after the band was compelled and gripped by the Netflix series, Dark. They wanted to create something which made them feel the same way through their music as a band.
Jan-Meyer Verhoef from Zebraman comments on the track
“The song is about all the possibilities offered by your ‘minute choices’ in life. The complexity of each and every choice we make, sets us on a certain path and the mystery and possibility of love which each of these paths hold. “Into The Night” asks a fundamental question in the chorus: ‘How can you say that you loved me in this life?’”
Specifically inspired by the soundscape of Dark and the mastery Ben Frost displayed over the particular ‘driven yet eery’ idiom of synth music, but also by artists such as The Weeknd and Post Malone who are currently managing to express themselves competently within retro soundscapes, the band set out to record a song about the possibilities of what life has to offer:
“All the possible relationships with different people we will never experience because life is too short – we wanted to make a song about all the feelings this thought evokes.” says Zebraman
The band describes the sound of “Into The Night” as an honest representation of what they want to do from an artistic point of view. It might not be perfectly aligned with standard ‘pop’ cadences, but the fact that they connect emotionally with the song tells them that there is something worth pursuing in this particular sound.
“We are nostalgic yet we are constantly moving forwards in time and this aesthetic seems to communicate our situation pretty clearly.” says the band.
“Into The Night” is carried by synth bass and driven drums along but with the nostalgic synth sound that ZEBRAMAN have grown fond of. Frontman Johan’s vocals reflect calm in the verses, but turns into an evocative and epic performance in the chorus.
“Anyone who has walked past someone, wondering what might have happened if they just had the courage to speak to them, would be able to identify with this song. What possibilities could have come from taking that leap and being fearless in a world where people so often are too afraid to make the first move? Fans can look forward to a song, we feel until now, is our most honest offering yet.” says the band.
