The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) was launched in 2004, conceived by its Artistic Director, Nina Schumann. Since then, it has been held every July—except for the two years impacted by Covid-19—making it the only festival of its kind in Africa.

Each year, it attracts approximately 300 students. Last year’s festival featured a stellar faculty of internationally renowned artists from 17 different countries!

Preparations for the 20th SICMF, scheduled for 4–13 July 2025, are already underway. Prof. Schumann is busy curating an exceptional lineup of artists and concert programs.
Festival Director Peter Martens, who has been part of SICMF since its inception, hints at an exciting mix of fresh talent and familiar faces who have significantly contributed to the festival’s success over the past two decades.
With the 20th edition promising to be a landmark event, students are encouraged to submit their entries early. Entries are now open, and an early bird special is available until 14 February 2025. Prospective participants can register at www.sicmf.co.za/online-entry/.
Martens also emphasized the festival’s dedication to transformation at Stellenbosch University. “We’ve made tremendous strides over the past 20 years.
In the last two years, most of our student participants came from previously disadvantaged backgrounds,” he shared. For 2025, the festival has allocated over half a million rands in bursaries.
These will be awarded based on financial need, provided applicants meet a minimum proficiency level. Martens added, “Bursaries are granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage students in need to apply early.”
Concert details will be announced in the new year. In the meantime, patrons can stay updated by visiting www.sicmf.co.za, where regular updates will be posted.
