The Journey to Jazz Festival is back for its third edition, ready to ignite curiosity about origins, culture, and society. Set in the charming town of Prince Albert, the festival runs from 1 – 4 May 2025.
Located in the heart of the Great Karoo, Prince Albert is emerging as a premier cultural destination, and the Journey to Jazz (J2J) festival reinforces this reputation.
J2J invites attendees to embark on a journey of discovery through the language of jazz—a genre renowned for its universal appeal and respect for indigenous traditions.
The Journey to Jazz Festival is set against the stunning backdrop of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a vibrant ecological environment, multiple venues, and a welcoming community.
In 2025, J2J will transport audiences through time with a carefully curated lineup of South African and international artists, assembled by creative director Brenda Sisane and artistic director Kyle Shepherd.
The following performers have been announced for Journey To Jazz 2025:
- Hilton Schilder: Cape Jazz pioneer and multi-instrumentalist whose mastery spans over 16 instruments, complemented by rich storytelling.
- Ernie Smith: Multi-award-winning artist blending jazz, African rhythms, and R&B.
- Carlo Mombelli & The Prisoners of Strange – Edition 2: Avant-garde, bass-driven compositions that navigate the fine line between brilliance and madness.
- Siya Makuzeni: Genre-defying trombonist and vocalist pushing musical boundaries.
- Paolo Damiani Last Land Band: An Italian trio featuring Damiani (bassist), Antonio Jasevoli (guitarist), and Elena Paparusso (vocalist), delivering an evocative exploration of humanity and the Earth.
- Kujenga: A Cape Town-based collective celebrating Black culture through spontaneous and vibrant improvisation.
- Outeniqua High School Jazz Band: Talented young South African musicians fusing traditional jazz with local influences.
Expect a Warm Karoo Welcome
Reflecting true Karoo hospitality, J2J features the fun-filled and diverse ‘Groet is n Moet’ (greeting is a must) activity program. Visitors can enjoy artist-led masterclasses, a night-at-the-museum dinner, ghost tours, bike rides, guided walks in the Swartberg mountains, a neighborhood goods market, and world-class exhibitions.
Tickets for these experiences are sold separately, with more details available on the J2J website.
The Journey to Jazz Festival is a Festival with Purpose
Beyond the music, Journey to Jazz is distinguished by its laid-back atmosphere and the freedom for attendees to explore, connect, and immerse themselves in the town. At its core, the festival is dedicated to sustainable development.
Founded by the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT) in 2023, the festival fosters local empowerment through skills training, employment, and cultural exchange. Over 70 local youth, mainly from Noord Einde, actively co-produce the event, creating meaningful social and economic impact.
