Nicholas Joubert’s debut single “Someone New” may concern a break-up, but the song is anything but gloomy. Wanting to write an upbeat pop song while maintaining a honest approach, based on real life experiences, the songster poured his heart out into “Someone New”.
Nicholas Joubert comments on “Someone New”
“I wrote this song after going through a breakup and navigating through all the emotions that go with it.”
Serving as a personal catharsis, Nicholas underwent a ton of self-reflection, learning a lot about himself and the world around him.
Nicholas explains
“Managing my emotions at the time of the break-up seemed almost impossible. I wrote down what I was going through and it was like my own personal therapy.”
Making himself completely vulnerable was a terrifying thought, but it was needed in order to make the song relatable. Though an avid writer, Nicholas Joubert had never written a song until ‘Someone New’. Motivated by his trip to The International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) convention in 2022, Nicholas was tasked with the assignment of writing an original song.
Nicholas Joubert explains
“I needed an original song for next year when I am going to the United States for the IMTA. I loved the song so much that I decided to release it as a single. And the story continues…”
The Pretoria based musician already has two new tracks up his sleeve, which he is excited to release to market early next year. On ‘Someone New’, Nicholas worked with producer Gino Lee at River Road Records in Qqeberha (Port Elizabeth).
The newcomer describes the process as enjoyable but equally stressful
“The recording process was intense. My producer Gino Lee knew exactly what he wanted from my vocal performance and he pushed me hard to achieve just that. I learnt a lot from Gino on how to better my vocals and I was extremely blessed to work with someone of his stature.”
Looking back, Nicholas reflects on the process of writing and recording a song, as well as releasing it to market, describing it as a lot more work than he anticipated.
“Getting the final product ready to the standard I wanted in my mind, was labour intensive, but it was all worth it in the end. Releasing music is like giving a gift to people. You put a lot of effort into it, but when you see people enjoying your music, the level of satisfaction is unparalleled.”
Knowing he put his absolute best into the making of the song, Nicholas says the releasing of the song is extremely rewarding. Confident that the ‘Someone New’ will be well received by the public, Nicholas’s wish is that people will feel good when they listen to the song. Although the story behind the song is sad, the aim was to create something upbeat and relatable. He was very adamant that he did not want a depressing debut single.
More info about Nicholas Joubert
Aged 25, Nicholas Joubert’s career in music entertainment is just kick-starting, but this isn’t his first rodeo. Growing up with an immense passion for music, Nicholas used to sing himself to sleep as a kid. His parents enjoyed music and it was blaring in the house, but neither had much musical abilities and therefore didn’t understand the youngster’s fervour for the art and his dream to become an entertainer.
Nicholas persisted. In primary school, he was scouted by the choir teacher to audition for the school choir. After primary school, while continuing his choral singing, the vocalist decided to pursue a solo career. By the time he reached high school, Nicholas had started singing lessons and really began to cultivate his voice.
Spending most of his high school years in Bloemfontein at Grey College Secondary, giving him a lot of time to home and begin perfecting his craft. Nicholas Joubert is also a piano player and recently took up guitar.
He explains: “Bloem is a very laid back and the people are really nice, however I like the fast paced environment of the city. Sometimes I go back to Bloem to quiet my mind, but then after a few days I am ready for the hussle again.”
With all that being said, the performer’s path wasn’t all that linear. When he finished high school, the youngster went on to study a business degree at the University of Pretoria. At 19 years of age, he founded his own company Evilox Lighting, operating in the construction industry.
Although the company closed in earlier 2021, the experience was invaluable and taught him a great deal about business, much of which he has applied to the launching of his now professional music career. These days, Nicholas Joubert wears many hats. He is a singer, model and actor and recently signed to 33 & Me Talent Agency.
