The rising Maskandi duo Istimela Samawele – twin brothers Bhekizizwe Thandokuhle Phakathi and Bhekozayo Thandoluhle Phakathi – step boldly into 2026 with their striking new single “Cognac”.
Featuring Maskandi heavyweight uGatsheni and Afropop favourites Q Twins, the track expands their growing signature sound that blends tradition, modern flair and honest storytelling.

Now part of the TalEmpire roster, Istimela Samawele continue shaping a fresh, youthful wave within contemporary Maskandi.
A Story Many South Africans Know All Too Well
Their latest release, “Cognac”, taps into a familiar narrative: a man who pours his earnings into partying and alcohol while neglecting long-term responsibilities like cattle ownership, lobola, home-building and securing a family legacy.
The duo approach the topic with sharp wit and candid commentary, delivering a track that entertains while pointing to deeper social truths.
A Memorable Opening Line With a Warning
The song launches with the vivid lyric: “Yaphela imali yam, bizani uBar Man, aletha iCognac, a-adde iTonic, ngiqede iBonus,” translating to: “My money is gone.
Call the barman to bring cognac and tonic – let me finish my bonus.” It’s a moment that’s both humorous and uncomfortably familiar, capturing the way year-end bonuses can vanish in a flash when short-term indulgence eclipses long-term stability.
With its fusion of Maskandi instrumentation and Afropop polish, “Cognac” offers a spirited reminder of how cultural pressures, financial habits and lifestyle choices intersect.
The Maskandi Duo Speak on Their Inspiration
Bhekizizwe explains the motivation behind the track: “We wanted to tell a story that feels real – something you hear in the village, in the taxi, even at work. ‘Cognac’ is entertaining, but it’s also a reminder about where our money goes.”
Bhekozayo adds: “Our music has always been about truth. If people can dance, laugh and still reflect on their lives after listening, then we’ve done our job.”
“Cognac” is now available on all major streaming platforms.
