South African music icon Louise Carver is back and brighter than ever with her vibrant new single “Crush On You”, a feel-good pop anthem accompanied by a nostalgic music video brimming with joy and color.
This release marks Louise Carver’s first since winning her long-overdue South African Music Award (SAMA) in 2023 for Best Adult Contemporary Album with the critically acclaimed Dark Secrets. “Crush On You” sees her stepping into a fresh, sparkly pop lane while still grounded in the emotional storytelling and vocal strength that have defined her career.
Produced by longtime collaborator Simz Kulla, the track taps into the shimmering essence of late-70s synth pop, echoing the golden age of disco with a Blondie-esque twist. Filled with infectious grooves and flirtatious energy, it’s a celebration of the butterflies and thrill that come with having a crush.
“‘Crush On You’ was inspired by that electric feeling—the irrational urge to be near someone, even if they’re out of reach,” says Carver. “I wanted the production to feel sexy and fun, with a nostalgic touch.”
A Dream Collaboration and a Pink Jeep
Louise Carver and Kulla’s creative chemistry shines once again, with Carver crediting him for understanding her voice and vision. The fun extended into the making of the music video, which features retro-inspired fashion, bold colors, and a rare pink Jeep, courtesy of Jeep South Africa.
“Simz understands my voice and storytelling on a deep level,” Carver adds. “We had such joy working on this song together, and filming the video was just as exciting!”
