J Mahon, the introspective and enigmatic singer-songwriter known for his honest lyricism and soul-stirring vocals, has released his latest single and music video, “The One Thing That Remains”. The track offers a deeply emotional preview of his forthcoming album Begin Again, Again, set for release later this year.
J Mahon is entering an Expansive New Chapter
After years of honing a confessional songwriting style, J Mahon entered 2023 with the vision of crafting a more expansive, immersive album experience. Inspired by the nostalgic teenage ritual of lying on a bed with headphones, he aimed to create something that captures that same magic and mystery.

Sonically, the single blends the tender fragility of Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston with the cinematic textures of chamber pop, reminiscent of artists like Spiritualized and Sigur Rós.
A Song About Enduring Connection
“The One Thing That Remains” is a powerful reflection on emotional boundaries, gratitude, and the strength found in the people (or even songs) who stay with us when others drift away.
J Mahon explains, “Much like the rest of the songs I write, this was written in one sitting of a few hours. Even when other people fall away from you, when you have a partner that you feel truly understands you and sticks by you, it’s the most important thing. This doesn’t necessarily need to be a romantic partner—it can be a friendship, or even a song.”

An Album Rooted in Reflection and Growth
Begin Again, Again is J Mahon’s most deliberate and cohesive work to date. Drawing from a collection of songs written between 2019 and 2023, the album was co-produced and mixed by Syd Kemp (Ulrika Spacek), allowing it to evolve organically over the course of a year.
Key contributors to the album include:
- Callum Brown (Ulrika Spacek) on drums
- Clementine Brown (The Penguin Cafe) on violin and viola
- Victoria RH on additional vocals
- Jason Mitchell (PJ Harvey, XTC, Aldous Harding) on mastering
A Spirit of Transformation
J Mahon’s growth is not just emotional but also musical. Just days before the recording sessions began, he taught himself piano in a rented London rehearsal room. Songs originally written on guitar were reimagined with delicate, piano-led arrangements—ushering in a new sound and spirit of transformation.
Begin Again, Again promises to be a mature, resonant journey through themes of recovery, home, and human connection—anchored by a voice that echoes the haunting beauty of Jeff Buckley and the poetic honesty of Townes Van Zandt.
