South African singer-songwriter Kalden Berg has unveiled the music video for his vibrant new single, “Mindy” – a sharp and witty exploration of one-sided love stories, wrapped in an infectious pop-rock groove with a playful dose of surreal humor.
Originally inspired by a scruffy, stubborn dog that refused to return Kalden’s affection, “Mindy” evolved into a deeper metaphor for toxic relationship cycles – the emotional Groundhog Day many people find themselves trapped in.
“I wrote this song after realizing the hilarity behind my relationship with a dog being so similar to the stories I’ve heard from so many of my friends,” says Kalden. “It’s about those relationships where no matter what you do, you end up right back where you started.”
The track was co-created with Kalden’s livestream community and written using his old, beat-up 10-year-old songbook. He recorded nearly every instrument himself, enlisting longtime collaborators Cinnamon Buns (bass) and Louie Lixx (guitar solo), with mixing by John Wisher and mastering by Ewald van Rensburg.
The programmed drums were an intentional choice, emphasizing the robotic, hypnotic repetition at the core of the song’s theme.
A DIY Music Video with a Twist
The accompanying DIY-style music video leans into the song’s surrealism, visually capturing the frustration and absurdity of emotional déjà vu. Each scene reboots into a slightly altered version of the last, reinforcing the feeling of starting over again and again — with hilariously absurd results.
