Singer-songwriter Alice Phoebe Lou has released her third single of the year, the tender and introspective “Old Shadows.”
A minimalist piano ballad, the track feels like a whispered confession — raw, poetic, and intensely personal. While the arrangement is simple, its emotional depth is anything but, showcasing Lou’s delicate yet resolute voice as she reflects on the weight of past heartbreak.
The track forms part of a growing collection of unearthed songs — emotional vignettes from Alice’s twenties that she once kept hidden away. “Old Shadows” is a love letter to the woman she once was, and a quiet celebration of how far she’s come.
“This one lived in the vault for a long time,” Alice explains. “It felt too sincere, too raw to see the light of day.” But when she finally revisited the song, it came with a sense of warmth — a wave of compassion for her younger self. “It’s about struggling to receive real love after so much confusion. When someone finally offers you care and acceptance, it can be terrifying. But it’s also beautiful.”
As with her recent singles “You and I” and “The Surface,” “Old Shadows” is entirely self-produced. This new creative direction marks a shift toward stripped-back storytelling — a sound that reflects the heart of her early days as a street performer in Berlin.
There’s a quiet power in these recent releases. They harken back to Alice’s formative years — busking with just a guitar and a voice, surrounded by strangers who became listeners. Yet, they also carry the maturity of an artist who’s lived deeply, loved vulnerably, and grown immensely.
With subtle synths and piano woven through “You and I,” and haunting lyrical detail across all three tracks, Alice has returned to music that feels less like a performance and more like a confession. She draws inspiration from songwriting greats like Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen, artists who shaped her early artistic identity.
A New Chapter is ahead for Alice Phoebe Lou
After spending nearly a decade building her career in Germany — and reaching 2.7 million monthly Spotify listeners — Alice Phoebe Lou is closing one chapter and preparing for another. “Germany shaped me,” she says. “Busking was where it all started. It taught me courage, connection, and how to listen to my own voice.”
With a trio of sold-out shows at The Lodge Room in LA, a performance at Red Rocks with Remi Wolf, and support slots for Clairo’s Charm Tour, Alice has spent 2024 deepening her bond with global audiences. She now embarks on a new leg of her journey with strongboi, supporting Men I Trust across North America.
For Alice Phoebe Lou, this moment in her career isn’t about reinvention — it’s about returning to essence. By producing her own music, she’s letting go of polish and leaning into what feels necessary.
“I wanted to be gentle with myself,” she shares. “Not everything has to be perfect. Sometimes the most powerful songs are the ones where you’re just… honest.”
“Old Shadows” is available to stream now, offering a glimpse into an artist who continues to lead with vulnerability — and invites her listeners to do the same.
