Today I’m featuring the music video for “Arm Yourself” (A song by Zebra and Giraffe). Zebra and Giraffe are an alternative rock band from Johannesburg, South Africa.
More info about Zebra and Giraffe
Their debut album, Collected Memories, was released in May 2008. The band were chosen to be the opening act for the recent tour of The Killers to South Africa. They also performed at Oppikoppi 2009 Smoorverlief (a festival I attented). It’s amazing that Zebra and Giraffe have drawn so much attention in only 1 year.
Zebra and Giraffe began as the 12-lettered pseudonym of Johannesburg music wunderkind, Greg Carlin. He recruited Alan Shenton (guitar), Andrew Maskell (bass), Rob Davidson (keyboards) and Darren Leader (drums) in order to perform live.
Zebra and Giraffe has now evolved into a live band that have toured across South Africa and played alongside international acts such as Oasis and Snow Patrol (at Cokefest 2009). They’ve also picked up a SAMA award for best Rock Album (in March 2009).
They were nominated for Best New Act and Best Video at the MK Awards in March 2009. Zebra & Giraffe were also nominated for 3 other SAMA Awards for Best Newcomer, Best Album Packaging and MTN Record of the Year for their song The Knife. I see a bright future and more albums on the horizon for Zebra & Giraffe and I’m hardly ever wrong about a band.
Their Indie rock style (which has been described as Foo Fighters mixed with Duran Duran by some critics) will be very well received internationally (in my opinion). Judging by the recent reception of SA acts like the The Parlotones internationally, Zebra & Giraffe could easily turn into another South African Musical success story.
