South African indie-pop favourites Rubber Duc are back with their latest single, “Girl Next Door” – a bright yet introspective track that dives headfirst into the messy, hyperconnected world of modern romance.
It’s the second single from their forthcoming EP Old Money and perfectly captures the feeling of falling for someone through a screen – where fantasy and reality begin to blur.

The Story Behind “Girl Next Door”
“‘Girl Next Door’ is really about life today and how easy it is to get lost behind our screens,” explains lead singer Nick Jordaan. “We live in a time where everything’s at our fingertips, and it’s become so easy to get caught up in the highlight reels people post online. The song talks about falling for the idea of someone, not who they really are, and how that can leave you stuck in this strange space where you’re completely obsessed, but they might never even know you exist.”
Blending catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and that laid-back charm that’s become their signature, “Girl Next Door” sees Rubber Duc once again reflecting on love, connection, and self-awareness in a world ruled by screens.

Rubber Duc Enter a Fresh Chapter with Old Money
With their first EP in several years on the horizon, Rubber Duc are entering a new creative chapter with Old Money – a five-track project featuring four new songs and a bonus track. “It feels authentically Rubber Duc again,” the band shares. “We went back to basics, just jamming together and focusing on feel before production. It reminded us why we love creating music as a group.”
Returning to Authenticity
More than a decade into their journey, Rubber Duc say Old Money represents a return to their roots – a reminder of what sparked their passion for music in the first place. They’ll be taking their new material on tour, with shows planned across South Africa, Dubai, and beyond.
“This EP feels like home,” they add. “It’s a reminder of who we are and why we started making music in the first place.”
