Hot on the heels of their recent new singles ‘Partners In Crime’ and ‘Prisoner Of Love’, South African Flash Rockers Marene return today with ‘Black Magic Girl’ as the third single from their upcoming album Rising After Midnight.
This is another fun, cheeky song that captures the essence and spirit of Marene, whilst proving they can blend multiple genres into one (and still have a song that can get stuck in pretty much anyone’s head). Marene confidently and competently delivers another earworm with infectious riffs and driving beats, designed to keep you on the edge of your seat!
Tyler Duggan (Marene Vocalist, Rhythm Guitar & Producer) comments on “Black Magic Girl”
“I wrote this song as an exploration of the captivating and dangerous allure of a mysterious woman. The lyrics depict her as both a blessing and a curse, with an undeniable beauty that allows her to see through others. The song delves into the dark and enigmatic nature of this woman, who resides in the shadows and holds a power that is both enticing and unforgiving.”
“The production of “Black Magic Girl” aimed to create an ethereal and atmospheric sound, invoking a sense of airiness. The intention was to evoke a visual experience for the listener, allowing them to immerse themselves in the music and conjure images in their minds. I wanted to create a captivating blend of rock licks and pop hooks, much like many other songs by Marene.”
“The song takes listeners on a journey, starting off small and intimate and gradually building up to a massive and impactful finale. ‘Black Magic Girl’, she’s a blessing, she’s a curse. And production was pretty much the same. Out of all the songs, this one was the most difficult to get right.”
“I just had a sound in my head I wanted to achieve and the first couple of mixes weren’t doing it for me. So we cut the song up, and rebuilt the entire beginning to better fit the atmosphere I wanted for the song. The end product is something I’m extremely proud of, not only are you listening to ‘Black Magic Girl’, but you’re also feeling her presence.”
Maronay Todkill (Marene Keyboardist & Vocalist) comments
“I had a lot of fun and freedom in ‘Black Magic Girl’ when it came to the instrumentation. The sky was the limit. And I believe that if you have this kind of freedom in a song, it can be a blessing and a curse, because you can do anything, but what do you do? ‘Black Magic Girl’ is Exactly that. A woman, an entity, that could be anything you want her to be: because she is magical.”
Ozzey Padayachee (Marene Bassist & Vocalist) comments
“Our journey in crafting ‘Black Magic Girl’ was an exhilarating exploration of mystique and creativity. Each note and lyric became a brushstroke, painting a vivid portrait of a captivating character. We delved into the depths of our imagination, merging haunting melodies with evocative storytelling.”
“The process was both thrilling and enchanting, as we sought to capture the essence of the Black Magic Girl and bring her enigmatic world to life through music. We hope that listeners will be entranced by the spellbinding aura of the song, just as we were during its creation.”
