Cape Town singer-songwriter Mikhaela Faye is back with her second EP, I’m Bored – a bold, genre-blending project that’s equal parts raw emotion and cheeky defiance.
Tackling everything from toxic relationships to existential limbo, Mikhaela peels back layers of vulnerability while embracing the carefree spirit of her younger, pop-punk self.

“I’ve made a lot of very serious, ‘try-hard’ music in my life,” she says. “The biggest disservice I can do to myself is to take it all too seriously. This EP was about shaking that off, embracing the naughties pop-punk teenage Mikhaela, and just having fun.”
Described by Mikhaela Faye as “hyperactive escapism”, the five-track EP dives into the disorienting pace of modern life and the emotional numbness it can bring.
“We become desensitised, overwhelmed, and amidst the media-driven frenzy of daily life, our brains shut down,” she explains. “Boredom is our protection — it’s our paralysis in a world that doesn’t feel held.”
Each song hits a different emotional note:
- “Smothered By U” captures the feeling of emotional suffocation,
- “Lost You For the Last Time” leans into dark introspection,
- “Uncool” pairs biting humour with self-awareness, and
- “Gaslighter”, the lead single released ahead of the EP, delivers a punchy anthem about walking away from a narcissist – all wrapped in catchy, pop-friendly production.
Produced with long-time collaborator Josh Berry, I’m Bored thrives on trust and experimentation. “Josh emboldened my production choices,” Mikhaela Faye shares. “I would never have made something that sounded like this without his skill, encouragement and guidance.”
The result? Club-ready beats layered with grief, self-doubt, and defiance — often within the same track. It’s an EP that embraces sonic chaos while reflecting on identity, growing pains, and the messy in-between of early adulthood.
True to her restless spirit, Mikhaela refuses to be boxed into a single genre. “I get bored very easily. I like taking on the role of different characters that represent me in some way,” she says. “I want to learn about different genres and have fun blending the unexpected – it’s like a musical smoothie. If you drank the same smoothie every morning, you’d be pretty uninspired, no? Music is music – it either makes you feel something or it doesn’t.”
I’m Bored is streaming now on all major platforms – an emotionally rich, sonically fearless ride for anyone ready to feel something new. Stream/download it HERE.
