Johannesburg-based artist Joneaux has unveiled his latest single, “18 Baby” — an indie pop track that dives into the chaos, magic, and heartbreak of teenage glory days. Blending colourful 80s synths with bass guitars and live drums, the song is both nostalgic and danceable, capturing the bittersweet feeling of youth slipping away.
Released on 25 April 2025, “18 Baby” has already earned early support from key tastemakers, landing on Spotify’s New Music Friday South Africa and I <3 Pop editorial playlists, as well as receiving radio play from 947 and MFM in South Africa.
A Soundtrack for Faded Glory
The track tells the story of a boy and a girl who know they’re living their best days — even as they feel them slipping away. It’s a modern anthem for anyone who’s ever felt like they peaked before the age of 18.
“I’m sure we all know those people whose best moments came in high school and may be behind them,” says Joneaux. “This song is for them. It’s energetic, nostalgic and hopefully something you can’t help but dance to.”
With shimmering retro elements and a tongue-in-cheek tone, the single blends the emotional depth of indie pop with a South African edge — reminiscent of artists like The 1975 and Bleachers.
More info about Joneaux
Born Jonathan Nunes, Joneaux is a self-produced independent artist whose sound blends indie pop, alternative rock, and a strong sense of nostalgia. Although his love for music has always been present, it wasn’t until his Matric year — performing One Direction’s “History” in a school play — that he discovered his passion for performing.
From humble beginnings and writing in his bedroom to landing editorial placements, Joneaux has emerged as a rising voice in South Africa’s indie scene. “18 Baby” marks his fourth release of 2025, with more singles and a full-length album on the way.
