Following his debut release “She Knows,” South African singer-songwriter Jago Alan returns with a deeply personal and poetic new single, “King of Hearts.”
“The inspiration behind this one came from a very specific time in my life,” says Jago. “I was reading Arthurian tales, the Bible, Moby Dick… even books about human origins. I’d hear things, notice rhythms, dream in images. It all started to loop and cycle. If this song is about anything, it’s about that strange, beautiful period. And yet that moment has passed. Now it’s something else entirely.”
Jago Alan’s “King of Hearts” is a reflection of heart and mind
Written alone on acoustic guitar, “King of Hearts” is rooted in both experience and exploration — a marriage of heart and mind.
Musically, the song continues Jago’s self-described journey within the singer-songwriter tradition: music born from authenticity, carrying forward the legacy of honest storytelling.
This is Jago’s second official release, following “She Knows,” which introduced his gentle, introspective sound. Where that debut hinted at his artistry, “King of Hearts” arrives as a bolder statement — a more complete reflection of who he is as a songwriter.
His work nods to legends like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Rodriguez, while maintaining a distinct voice of his own.
A journey across continents
Jago’s musical path has spanned continents — from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Newfoundland to rural England — shaping both his sound and lyrical perspective. “I started writing songs when I was 16,” he reflects. “Back then, I thought I was in communion with angels. I’ve kept writing ever since.”
“King of Hearts” is taken from Jago’s forthcoming EP, which will be released in phases over the coming months. He calls this track “the one I’m most proud of” — a song that captures his essence, voice, and worldview. “These upcoming releases… they’re a kind of begging. I’m asking for the songs to be heard, to find a home.”
“King of Hearts” is out now on all digital platforms. Stream/download it HERE.
