More info about Mel Malisch
Growing up in the seaside village of Kommetjie, Cape Town, Mel Malisch embarked on her musical journey at the age of six by learning piano.
However, it was a transformative decision at 27 to pick up the guitar that ignited her passion for songwriting. As her musical style evolved, deeply influenced by the 90s indie-folk scene, she began to use her craft as a means of emotional catharsis, drawing from her personal tragedies and life experiences.
“The song was inspired by an unexpected friendship I formed with a fellow musician,” Mel shares. “I was able to record my very first single by trading my technical drafting skills for studio time. I couldn’t believe how everything aligned, and I felt immense gratitude for those who helped make it happen.”
This single encapsulates the core message of her upcoming album: embracing life’s challenges with gratitude.
As Mel explains, “Simply put, the more you choose gratitude and focus on the good, the better everything will be. Start with a grateful heart, and the rest will follow.”
Known for her distinctive songwriting style, Mel Malisch weaves stories through her music using intricate chord progressions and melodies that reflect her emotional state.
“My approach usually depends on my mood—majors for when I feel thankful, minors for when I don’t,” she says. “The story is always present in my mind, and the music is just my way of expressing it.”
With “Grateful Hearts”, Mel Malisch is poised to make her mark on the South African music scene, bringing her raw, relatable style to audiences who crave heartfelt and honest music.
