Renowned multi-award-winning DJ and music producer DJ Fresh (SA) makes a powerful return with his deeply personal new single, “Mama (Thabiso)”—the lead track from his latest EP, RE:Fresh, released on 13 December 2024 through DanceAfrika Records.
This soulful Afro House anthem serves as a heartfelt tribute to Thabiso, the remarkable mother of his children.
“Mama (Thabiso)” is more than just a song—it’s a heartfelt tribute to the enduring love, strength, and sacrifices of mothers. Featuring the emotive, bilingual vocals of Kyle Deutsch (English) and LindAlive (isiZulu), the track deeply resonates with universal themes of maternal love and encouragement.
Produced by DJ Fresh (SA) and long-time collaborator Shona SA, the song serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role mothers play in shaping lives and supporting dreams.
“This track celebrates a mother’s love, her encouragement, the memories she leaves behind, and her sacrifices,” explains DJ Fresh (SA).
“It’s a dedication to Thabiso—whom my kids lovingly called ‘Mama.’ After her passing, this felt like the perfect way to honor her and celebrate moms everywhere. Maybe, just maybe, it becomes the new anthem for Mother’s Day next year!”
The EP RE:Fresh carries even deeper meaning, as it draws inspiration from DJ Fresh’s children, with each track named after one of them. However, “Mama (Thabiso)” stands out as a full-circle moment. DJ Fresh reflects on his journey with Kyle Deutsch, whose first song was championed by Fresh on 5FM nearly 15 years ago.
Now, the two reunite on a track that blends soaring vocals, heartfelt storytelling, and Afro House rhythms to create a global anthem.
“This collaboration feels serendipitous,” Fresh shares. “Kyle and LindAlive each brought their own magic, and Shona SA and I crafted the production to complement their artistry. It’s a song that’s raw, honest, and filled with love.”
Shona SA emphasizes the personal significance of “Mama (Thabiso)” as a celebration of mothers. “This song is deeply special to me. Having been raised by a single mom from the age of 5, I owe everything to her. Losing her at 11 left a huge void, and Mother’s Day is always tough. Every mom deserves to be celebrated.”
“Musically, the chord progressions and chorus capture the spirit of honoring mothers worldwide. The vision was to unite nations, cultures, and ethnicities in singing along to one song, celebrating our mothers and grandmothers. It’s an honor to work with Kyle, my big brother DJ Fresh, and LindAlive, who added unique melodies. I hope this track resonates with everyone and spreads positivity.”
Kyle Deutsch describes “Mama (Thabiso)” as a meaningful and relatable song. “There’s an incredible story behind it, but we’ll share more later. It’s relatable and sonically epic. Having worked with Shona before, I sent him some vocals, and he added the production and hook. When he sent it back, I knew the song was special.”
“It’s a full-circle moment for me,” Kyle continues. “My first track ever released was first played on radio by DJ Fresh. Now, releasing a track with him feels surreal. Fresh brings his iconic energy, and we’re delivering fire with the vocals and music. It’s an epic combo, and I’m excited about what’s to come.”
For LindAlive, the track is equally meaningful. “I’m so excited for this song. I keep playing it in my head because I’m so proud to be part of this project. It means a lot to me as someone raised by a mom.”
“Expressing my feelings through melodies and words came naturally because it came from the heart. As a rising artist, working with Fresh and Kyle has been an incredible learning experience. I can’t wait for people to hear this song.”
DJ Fresh’s new EP marks the next step in his illustrious career
After decades of radio dominance, he’s now embracing the global stage. His partnership with DanceAfrika Records, a label rooted in authenticity and cultural celebration, is the perfect platform for this journey.
“I’ve always been about the ‘why,’ and DanceAfrika’s mission aligns perfectly with mine,” says DJ Fresh. “This partnership is about more than music—it’s about culture, community, and pushing boundaries.”
The launch of DanceAfrika signals a new chapter for African electronic music, amplified by Paradise Worldwide’s backing. With ambitious plans for global expansion through hubs in New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, and the UK, DanceAfrika is set to make waves internationally while remaining true to its African roots.
Sean Barber, owner of Rockets, echoes DJ Fresh’s excitement: “Signing a South African icon like DJ Fresh is a huge milestone for Rockets Media and DanceAfrika. We’re eager to see what this partnership creates.”
The five-track EP, ‘RE:Fresh,’ highlights DJ Fresh’s versatility and passion, featuring collaborations with Shota, Kyle Deutsch, Shona SA, and LindAlive. With its fusion of Afro House rhythms, uplifting beats, and powerful storytelling, the EP promises to be a landmark release in his career.
