After turning heads with his breakout debut “Old Friend” (which garnered over 100,000 streams and climbed major South African radio charts), David Derman returns with his most intimate work yet.
His new single, “Morning Light,” is a tender, contemplative track inspired by the idea of becoming a parent someday—a theme close to David’s heart since becoming an uncle.
“Morning Light” was written in the quiet moments after David Derman first held his newborn nephew, a moment that unexpectedly shifted his perspective on love and legacy.
“Becoming an uncle changed how I see love,” he explains. “Even though I’m still young and single, I started imagining what it would feel like to love a child of my own. This song is a reflection of that emotional promise—to love someone even before they exist.”
What results is a beautifully understated track that blends raw vulnerability with emotional depth. Lyrically and sonically, it captures the idea of holding space for someone you’ve yet to meet—a message as poetic as it is profound.
Warm Production with an Honest Folk-Pop Heart
“Morning Light” was produced by Aidin Nortje and Devon Murray, the talented team also known for We Could Be Related. The song leans into stripped-back, folk-rooted textures—plucked strings, subtle ambient layers, and vocals that sit close to the listener’s ear.
“It’s about emotional safety,” David says. “The kind of bond that endures, even when life changes. That love is always there, like the morning light.”
The result is gentle yet powerful—a folk-pop track that glows with sincerity and a sense of quiet reverence.
David Derman is a Rising Artist with an Authentic Voice

He was recently featured on Spotify’s Indie Go playlist and has performed to captivated crowds at Mojo Market and the 2025 edition of Up the Creek Festival. His music continues to evolve, but his lyrical honesty remains constant.
“I’m exploring different genres and moods as I work on my first EP,” he says. “But at the core, it always comes back to honest, heartfelt songwriting. That’s what matters most to me.”
With Morning Light, David Derman continues to carve out a space in South Africa’s indie music scene with authenticity, emotional intelligence, and songs that speak directly to the heart.
