South African stalwarts Beatenberg has shared a new song from their upcoming EP and announced a big run of tour dates, including a return to their home country, South Africa in December! “White Shadow” is the third song from the bands’ first release in four years and follows on from previous singles ‘Time Machine‘ (July) and ‘The Lighthouse of Alexandria‘ (June).
“White Shadow” features South African composer, singer and songwriter Msaki who also stars in the video alongside the band’s vocalist, Matthew Field.
Matthew Field comments on “White Shadow”
“‘White Shadow’ was an incomplete demo I had lying around for a long time – everyone liked it but we couldn’t settle on a chorus, At some point we decided to reach out to our friend Msaki since we love her music and sensibilities and thought she could help us find the missing piece of the puzzle – and she did!”
“We started with some sessions in Cape Town and finished the production and made the video in London. The song is on the longer side for us and goes through some twists and turns; the lyrics are similarly winding and seem to sprawl across a variety of landscapes and feelings. This seems fitting given the time and geographic span of the making of the song.”

More info about Beatenberg
Beatenberg are one of the most celebrated bands to emerge from South Africa over the past decade and are made up of Matthew Field (vocals and guitar), Robin Brink (drums), and Ross Dorkin (bass). Field and Dorkin are now based in London and Brink Berlin. The singles are from their upcoming EP which is due on the 10th of November via UK label Leafy Outlook (who also release M Field’s solo records).
Beatenberg have long been stalwarts of the South African music scene for their canny ability to channel different styles and rhythms into sublimely crafted, genre-defying pop music. An early single ‘Pluto (Remember You)‘ set the country’s national airplay record, spending 17 weeks on radio charts, and went on to win four prizes at the South African Music Awards in 2015. It was more than just a one-hit wonder. BEATENEBRG’s debut album ‘The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg‘ also won Album Of The Year that year, and the band took home the Group Of The Year prize.
The band’s new EP is out on the 10th November on Leafy Outlook with its third single, “White Shadow” out now. As part of the release of the new track and further tour announcement, Beatenberg will broadcast a couple of tracks, both old and new, on the Vice homepage on release day, September 1st at 4PM BST. The pre-recorded live session will only be shown once and won’t stay up on the site afterwards.
Beatenberg To Return To South Africa in December 2022
To celebrate the release of their brand new EP in November, Beatenberg will return home in December for a performance at Constitution Hill on 3 December 2022. More dates to be announced soon! Their South African shows form part of their latest tour for the release of the new EP where they will be visiting the US, UK, EU and South Africa.
“We’re all really glad to be playing in South Africa again. Even though we’re increasingly working and spending time in other countries, it remains a hugely important place for us. It’ll likely be an emotional experience, and I hope it brings the best out of us. See you soon South Africa!”
Tickets for Beatenberg‘s show at Constitution Hill will go on sale on Monday, 7 November via Hero Ticket.
Beatenberg‘s brand new EP is set for release on 10 November 2022.
