Basel Grey, renowned for his chart-topping dance hits, releases his latest single, “Wena Lala,” a soul-stirring composition that delves into the depths of love, heartbreak, and personal growth.
“Wena Lala” is more than just a song; it’s a testament to resilience and the creative process. Basel Grey reflects on the origins of the track, stating, “Wena Lala started as a project all the way back in 2019 when Ntarra Cranx sent me a 30-second idea he had for a track. After listening to the track, I kept hearing the melody of Wena Lala. The hook instantly jumped at me, and Wena Lala was born.”

The journey to the creation of “Wena Lala” faced a setback when Cranx lost the initial track in 2019. However, fate brought them back to the project in 2022, where they started from scratch, creating a song that encapsulates the raw emotions of love and betrayal. Basel Grey shares, “The track is about loving someone with all you have but knowing they are not being faithful.”
The production of “Wena Lala” showcases the dedication of Basel Grey and Ntarra Cranx, who worked in over 12 different studios across Joburg. The sounds draw inspiration from authentic Afro beats and Basel Grey’s recent trip to Lebanon, where the streets echoed with the mesmerizing sounds of the Darbuka drum. The inclusion of this drum, played by a South African Darbuka player, elevates the track to new heights.
Basel Grey, who has seen success with his previous singles, is thrilled to make a comeback in 2023. Reflecting on his personal experiences, he notes, “Having gone through my own personal heartbreak in 2021 certainly contributed to the track and will contribute to a lot of music to be released soon.”
Working with Ntarra Cranx for over seven years, Basel Grey acknowledges Cranx’s pivotal role in the production of his music. “He has always been behind the scenes in producing most of my music; it is only now that he has chosen to put his name on the cover and bring himself into the forefront.”
“Wena Lala” is poised to become the heartbreak anthem of the year, with Basel Grey expressing his dream for the song to be screamed on dance floors at festivals across the country. The single is already gaining traction, being featured in the launch of the Joburg Summer Cup and supported by a finished 6’10 extended club mix, ready to dominate the summer club scene.
Basel Grey’s previous hits, including “Come Back Home,” “Deep In,” and “On Our Knees,” have all reached number 1 on dance charts around the country, solidifying his position as a chart-topping artist.
