Majozi is a South African indie folk/pop artist originally from Durban, known for his sincere, uplifting music and heartfelt songwriting.
Born as Nhlanhla Majozi in Durban in 1987, he began teaching himself guitar at age 13, which led him to study jazz and popular music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His artistic journey began in the Durban music scene, where he played in various Christian punk and underground hardcore bands as a teenager.
His faith and relationship with his mother are central influences in his life and work, symbolized by the tattoos he wears in their honor.
Majozi’s sound is a warm blend of indie folk, pop, and subtle electronic influences, characterized by emotionally honest lyrics and vibrant melodies.
His debut EP, Marvelous Light (2013), quickly gained national attention, with singles like “The River” enjoying major radio play and propelling him into the South African music spotlight.
Majozi’s first full-length album, Fire (2016), debuted in the South African iTunes Top 3 and earned a nomination at the South African Music Awards (SAMA) for Best Adult Contemporary Album.
His follow-up, the self-titled album Majozi (2018), featured hit singles like “Waiting” and “Somebody,” both reaching number one on local charts. The album also included a collaboration with the Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir.
Majozi’s music is recognized for its approachable themes—love, faith, self-discovery—and is noted for its openness and vulnerability, resonating with a wide audience in South Africa and beyond.
He’s performed at major festivals such as Rocking the Daisies, Oppi-Koppi, White Mountain, and KDay, and has opened for international acts like The Lumineers, Yoav, Mango Groove, and Calum Scott.
Alongside his vocal performances, Majozi plays guitar, keys, and drums, and is one of only three South African artists to serve as an ambassador for Fender, the iconic guitar brand.
Based now in Cape Town, Majozi continues to tour and grow his fanbase with both studio releases and energetic live performances marked by a spirit of kindness and authenticity.
