After 20 years as one of the most iconic bands in South African rock ‘n roll, Akkedis are releasing their 6th album, Onder Ou Tafelberg.

This album has been 7 years in the making and encompasses an array of styles and subject matters to represent the wide variety of fans the band have gathered through the years. SAMA winning producer, Peter Pearlson, skilfully captures their complex sound; from African inspired rhythms to gritty rock ‘n roll and back to acoustic melodies. Akkedis did not hold back, and let their ingenuity run wild.

“We took our time with this album and made sure that creatively it represented everything we have been crafting in the past 20 years.” says Arthur Dennis (lead guitarist and vocalist of Akkedis).

The title, Onder ou Tafelberg, pays homage to those who forged their lives in the streets of District 6 and can be heard in the first single from the album, Musiek van Hanover Straat. The album artwork was hand drawn by drummer, Rudolph Dennis.

Here’s the track list for the album:

    1. “Twintig Jaar Anderkant die Berg” – A rewrite of the classic Akkedis hit “Anderkant die Berg”. The song has been adapted to reflect their journey of the past 20 years.
    2. “Elektriese Crazy Angel” – The first love song from the trio; of a girl who hates men!
    3. “Musiek van Hanover Straat” – A vibrant recollection of the life and times of inhabitants of District 6.
    4. “Nos Amamos Mozambique” – A tribute to a country that has brought them countless adventures and memories through their career.
    5. “Die Donker Kom Jou Haal” – This Valiant Swart track has become a fan favourite in the Akkedis set.
    6. “Ode Ana Ouma Grietjie Adams” – Ouma Grietjie is the Griekwa icon behind “Lekker Ou Jan”.
    7. “Honky Tonk Swerwer” – An archetypal slow blues track reminiscing about a lost soul.
    8. “Versigtig Lewe” – A dark song about an even darker individual.
    9. “Waars die Revolusie” – A strong reggae influence questions the existence of revolutions and radical change in modern society.
    10. “Elkeen vir Homself” – In this unapologetic rock ‘n roll anthem shedding light on the “every mam for himself” mentality we are faced with today.
    11. “Bomskok Son” – The closing track is an acoustic melancholy look back on the formative years of the artists and their peers.

You can catch Akkedis live at Cafe Roux in Noordhoek, Cape Town on the 15th of June, at Saronsberg Theater in Tulbagh on the 24th of June, at the Knysna Oyster Festival on the 9th of July, at Ou Meul Teater in Paarl on the 16th of July, at Thirsty Oyster Tavern in Gordon’s Bay on the 22nd of July and at Die Boer in Durbanville on the 26th of July.
