Cape Town-based artist Yoshe has dropped his new single, “Lost My Way”, a bold alt-R&B and electronic fusion that challenges genre boundaries.
Folding soulful Afro-R&B textures into Daft Punk-inspired electronic grit, the track feels like two songs in one – both a sonic experiment and a deeply personal meditation.
“Literally, it’s alternative Afro-R&B meets Daft Punk,” says Yoshe. “Metaphorically, it’s that strange comfort you sometimes find in disorientation. Like, yeah, I’m lost – but maybe that’s exactly where I’m meant to be.”
A Song Years in the Making
“Lost My Way” was originally written during Yoshe’s time with the acclaimed band Grassy Spark, in the middle of a whirlwind of success. “I recorded it with Yanick Bathfield during our debut album sessions, but it didn’t belong on that project,” he explains.
At the time, Yoshe and Grassy Spark were touring with UB40, opening for Mac Miller, and sharing stages with The Kooks and Milky Chance. “Maybe I was starting to feel the weight of all of that,” he reflects. “I didn’t know it then, but I think I was beginning to untangle my need for external validation.”
Now, years later and stepping into his solo career, the song carries new meaning. “Today the song is about maturing from my love for validation into validating my love for the people closest to me; family, friends, just people generally. Universally, it’s about the irony of getting lost – that in order to find yourself, you need to get lost, whether in the things you love or the things you think you love.”
Crafting an Honest Sound
Produced by long-time collaborator Greg Abrahams at Sound Foundry, “Lost My Way” blends layered synths, stuttering percussion, and unexpected melodic shifts. Yoshe’s vocals balance urgency and introspection, giving the track emotional weight.
“Greg can take the mess of my mind and turn it into gold,” Yoshe shares. “We’re just two people trying to make something honest, and that’s what this track is.”
He also credits Quiet Life Co, his independent label in Woodstock, for encouraging authenticity. “It’s scary sometimes to know the vision rests on me – but they hold space for the process. They’ve helped me realise this isn’t about instant results. It’s about quality. It’s about story.”
Yoshe’s new track is part of a bigger journey
“Lost My Way” is the latest single from Yoshe’s upcoming debut EP, Beautiful Disappointment, set for release in August.
“Finally sharing Yoshe with the world this year has been the highlight of my life,” he says. “Now there’s space for more beautiful things to come in – so I can make more beautiful things.”
