Elegant, cinematic and quietly powerful, “Born To This” introduces South African singer-songwriter Verra Lake with a striking sense of identity.
Her artistry blends old-world glamour with modern sophistication, creating a sound that feels both timeless and immediate.

Verra Lake describes the track
“It’s a reminder that even when the world feels sharp, love can be the thing that brings us back to ourselves.”
It’s a song about devotion, endurance and choosing softness in a demanding world. Co-written by legendary South African composer Patric van Blerk, known for classics such as “Paradise Road” and “We Are Growing”, together with Andy Dunlop, the single carries emotional weight and lyrical resilience.
Produced by van Blerk and Tony Drake, with additional input from Paul Petersen and Dunlop, the track moves with cinematic warmth. Piano, brass and strings wrap around Verra’s poised, intimate vocals, creating a lush but deeply personal atmosphere.
Verra calls the experience “an honour,” noting van Blerk’s immense influence on South African music. Bringing “Born To This” to life with him felt, she says, like stepping into a larger creative story.
Recorded at Lightway Music and CapeTown Sound Studios, “Born To This” marks a new chapter for Verra Lake. It also forms part of a growing artistic collective that encourages collaboration, experimentation and surprising creative partnerships.
The single is accompanied by a visualiser featuring dancers from the Imibala Trust Ballet Programme in Somerset West, a community initiative close to van Blerk’s heart. Their performances add innocence, emotional depth and a sense of devotion to the themes of the song, extending the cinematic world Verra is shaping.
Alive, fluid and constantly evolving, Verra Lake continues to build a musical universe that feels cinematic, expressive and enduring.
