The Amblers have never been a band to play it safe. Known for their raw grit, honest songwriting, and uncompromising ethos, the South African duo now step into bold new territory with the release of their upcoming EP, Never the Two Shall Part – out today via Mongrel Records.
The Amblers‘ evolution is striking but never contrived. For the first time, they incorporate synth textures and layered production elements into their sound.
Yet, true to form, the music retains the weight, soul, and signature tones that have earned them a dedicated following.
“We’ve branched out a bit,” the band shares. “There’s a lot more synth work and some new production techniques in the mix. But it all still fits. It’s undeniably The Amblers — just more of what’s always been there, waiting to come out.”
Organic Songwriting Approach
Unlike many contemporary releases that are designed around marketing strategies or big concepts, Never the Two Shall Part emerged organically. The band describes the process simply: songs written out of instinct and necessity.
“We were simply writing again — letting songs come naturally. There was no major concept or theme. Just a continuation of the work. When it’s time to create, we create.”
Reflecting a Divided World
And while they resist being pinned down to politics or identity narratives, The Amblers acknowledge that the world’s divisions inevitably seep into their work.
“It’s not South Africa specifically – more the state of the world. It’s divided. Always has been. Maybe always will be. That’s why art matters. Artists push back. They interrogate. They speak when everything else is noise.”
Still, this isn’t music built to deliver easy answers. Never the Two Shall Part is about expression, not resolution. Every song is personal, yet open for interpretation, inviting listeners to derive their own meaning.
“We don’t have a formula. Songs come how they come. No desired outcome. We don’t create with an audience in mind. It’s for us — and always has been. That authenticity is what people connect to in the end.”
The EP was brought to life with help from trusted collaborators. Drums were recorded at High Seas Studios with Jacques Du Plessis, while much of the band’s unmistakable guitar tone comes from gear crafted by Benjamin Craig of Craig Amps. Both remain integral to The Amblers’ sonic identity.
The Amblers are looking ahead
With Never the Two Shall Part, The Amblers once again prove that they are more than just a band — they are artists who push boundaries while staying true to themselves. And, as they hint, this is only the beginning.
“We’re already writing. More music is definitely on the way.” the band hints.
