Sho Madjozi has become the first female South African to win a BET Award! She’s the third South African in history to win a BET Award.
The South African rapper, singer and songwriting superstar walked away with the Best New International Act Award at the BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.
The award comes a year after Sjava won the Viewers’ Choice: Best International Act Award at the BET Awards. Black Coffee was the first South African to win a BET. He was named Best International Act: Africa award in 2016.
Sho Madjozi inspired millions of young girls during her acceptance speech: “My story is a testament that you can come from any village, in any forgotten part of the world, and still be a superstar.”

South Africans send their ecstatic congratulations for the young star via Twitter. Madjozi beat the likes of Teniola Apata (from Nigeria), Headie One and Octavian (from the UK) and France’s Jokair and Nesly. The award is decided by fans.
Sho Madjozi celebrated the win with Cardi B. She gave her props in a video posted via Instagram Stories. “I saw you girl! I saw you won. Congrats,” Cardi said to Sho in the video.

She walked away with the Newcomer of the Year and Female Artist of the Year awards at SAMA25 earlier this month. Sho Madjozi is known for incorporating Tsonga culture in her music.
She released her debut album Limpopo Champions League in December 2018. Thanks to this she received recognition. The album experiments with fusing elements from various genres including hip hop and Tsonga music.
