    SAMA31 Theme and Hosts Announced

The South African Music Awards (SAMA31) bloom this year under the theme “Flowers For Those Who Keep Our Nation Singing,” a vibrant celebration of creativity, resilience and the ever-growing spirit of South African music. The theme acts as both a tribute and a metaphor, honouring artists while they can still enjoy the recognition they deserve.

In an industry that has weathered storms, adapted through sweeping digital shifts and stood firm through cultural transformation, “Flowers For Those Who Keep Our Nation Singing” is a reminder that recognition reaches far beyond trophies.

    SAMA31

It speaks to artistry, longevity and the power to inspire. The stage at SAMA31 will unfold like a garden of gratitude, with each performance, nomination and collaboration reflecting the richness of the country’s sonic landscape.

A Celebration Rooted in Global Tradition

“We wanted to celebrate artists not just for their achievements, but for their courage to create,” says Unati Gwija, SAMA Spokesperson. “‘Flowers For Those Who Keep Our Nation Singing’ is a call to appreciation, to give our artists their flowers now. It is about recognising the musicians, producers, composers and collaborators who keep South Africa singing, who turn struggle into sound and rhythm into resilience.”

The ceremony draws inspiration from global traditions where flowers are gifted as a gesture of gratitude and admiration, from curtain calls in British theatres to bouquets for prima donnas in Paris. SAMA31 reimagines that ritual in a proudly South African context. Each award symbolically becomes a bloom, unique and radiant in its own way.

A Hybrid Celebration Reaching New Audiences

The hybrid event set for 14 December 2025 will merge physical spectacle with digital innovation, carrying the celebration far beyond the auditorium. Through live streaming, interactive moments and community-driven storytelling, audiences will be invited into a fresh, inclusive experience of what it means to honour South African excellence in music.

SAMA31 will be a closed event to ensure the highest production quality for viewers at home, but fans will still enjoy every moment through digital platforms and the later broadcast on SABC1.

A Visual Language Rooted in Growth

This year’s creative direction highlights sustainability and artistic expression, featuring floral installations designed by local creatives. The visual language of “Flowers For Those Who Keep Our Nation Singing” embraces organic textures, vivid colours and motifs of growth, symbolising how artists continue to flourish even in challenging environments.

Gwija adds, “We are in an age where the world watches South African music with new eyes. ‘Flowers For Those Who Keep Our Nation Singing’ is our way of saying thank you to every artist who has made that possible. Whether they are household names or underground innovators, this is their bouquet, a collective standing ovation.”

    Partners Supporting South African Music

With partners including the Motsepe Foundation, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA), the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO), the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, YouTube and media partner SABC, SAMA31 upholds its status as the gold standard of South African music.

As anticipation builds, one thing is certain. South African music continues to grow wild and beautiful, rooted in heritage and reaching toward new horizons.

    Introducing the Hosts of SAMA31

The awards will shine with the magnetic presence of Scoop Makhathini, born Siyabonga Ngwekazi. The acclaimed writer, television presenter and dynamic multimedia entrepreneur will host the SAMA31, a hybrid celebration set for 14 December 2025.

He will share the stage with co-presenter Pamela Mtanga, forming a duo known for their high energy, effortless charisma and ability to captivate audiences with bold, confident storytelling.

A Dynamic Duo Taking Centre Stage

SAMA Spokesperson Unati Gwija expresses full confidence in the pairing. “The SAMA has always been a platform that honours excellence, and our presenters must embody that spirit. Makhathini and Mtanga bring a rare combination of experience, authenticity and cultural resonance. Together they will deliver a hybrid show that is fresh, compelling and worthy of the legacy of South African music.”

Pamela Mtanga: A New Bloom with Radiant Energy

Pamela Mtanga stands as one of the country’s brightest rising talents, a multimedia entrepreneur, broadcaster and digital storyteller whose rise has been swift and magnetic. Her journey began online, where her distinct voice and intuitive sense of youth culture drew the attention of audiences and brands across the continent.

With a Media and Communications degree from Nelson Mandela University, she transitioned into television, becoming a standout presenter on Channel O’s Massive Music. Her ability to translate sound into narrative and performance into connection has become her signature.

Beyond her on-screen presence, Pamela is admired for her entrepreneurial vision, her influence in fashion and beauty and her commitment to authentic African storytelling. She arrives on the SAMA31 stage with confidence, cultural fluency and a vibrant energy that mirrors the spirit of this year’s theme.

Siyabonga “Scoop” Ngwekazi: A Cultural Voice with Deep Roots

Siyabonga “Scoop” Ngwekazi remains one of South Africa’s most influential cultural commentators. His career spans decades, and his voice has helped shape national conversations around music, fashion, art and urban culture.

He first captured widespread attention through shows like Street Journal on SABC1, where his insight, sharp humour and deep understanding of cultural movements established him as a defining figure. As a writer, presenter, producer and co-founder of Parental Advisory Productions, Scoop has consistently championed the narratives behind the sound and the lived experiences that give South African music its colour.

Leading the Ceremony with Heart and Purpose

Together, Pamela and Scoop embody the duality of this year’s celebration: new petals and deep roots, vibrancy and wisdom. They will guide the evening as more than presenters, bringing the spirit of giving artists their flowers to life at every moment.
