London-based musician Nic Billington unveils his soul in “Goodbye,” an emotional power ballad from his critically acclaimed album Dark Horse, released earlier this year.
Garnering rave reviews from Wonderland, Numero, Texx and the City and others, “Goodbye” is a poignant tribute to his late grandmother, showcasing Nic’s journey of loss and resilience.
Larry Flick, Music Curator and former Billboard columnist, lauded “Goodbye” as “poignant and beautiful,” predicting listeners will love it.
Nic’s bond with his grandmother was forged through shared hardships in Scotland, marked by financial struggles and homelessness.
Despite these challenges, she remained his unwavering support, ensuring he had bus money for school and a comforting meal each day. True superheroes often wear the guise of grandmothers.
In 2020, as Nic began creating Dark Horse, his grandmother passed away unexpectedly. This poignant journey started on the day he recorded the album’s first song, marking their final phone conversation.
His grandmother wanted to hear it, but Nic, thinking he had time, asked her to wait until it was complete. Tragically, this was their last exchange, and he never got to play the song for her.
Recording “Goodbye” became a cathartic expression of grief, with South African producer Paul Gala bringing Nic’s raw emotions to life. Describing himself as “a ship without a harbor” in the emotive lyrics, Nic pours his heart into each piano-led note of the song.
“This song is the most personal one I’ve ever written. Recording it was challenging because it was so raw and recent. However, I’m happy I did it when I did because it truly captured the emotion,” says Nic.
Accompanying the single is a stunning music video featuring Nic Billington’s emotional performance and the dramatic landscapes of Iceland—one of Nic’s favorite destinations.
The location might look familiar as it’s the same iconic backdrop where the Spice Girls filmed their first single, “Wannabe,” at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London in 1996.
