Lucky Packet is a band from Johannesburg. Playing an eclectic blend of alternative rock and modern soul music, Lucky Packet blends a range of influences and styles to create a sound that’s uniquely South African. They hit 2021 running with the release of their first single ‘It’s Alright’ off the debut album Ancient History.
More info about Lucky Packet
Band members and principal songwriters Katlego Mpepele and Brendan Peacock met in 2015 when Mpepele – then signed to a label as a solo artist – was looking for a guitarist to back him in live shows. The pair soon began writing songs and lay the groundwork for Lucky Packet.
With guitarist Yuri Nadasen joining the group soon after, Mpepele cut ties with his label and the band forged ahead with its new direction. The band refined and matured its sound over the next few years, until Ancient History (a word play on taking too long to release a debut album) was ready.
The album was recorded, mixed and mastered in Johannesburg over nine months and through Covid-19 lockdown. The album features Travis Johnston on drums and Jason Green on bass. A well known, admired and loved session musician in South Africa and abroad, Jason was to succumb to Covid-19 in late 2020 before the album was finalised. The news was a shock to both the band and the South African musical community. The album turned out to be the last work Jason ever did as a session musician.
Ancient History was mastered by the incomparable Rogan Kelsey and released on all digital streaming and purchase platforms in December 2020.
