    More info about Jamie-Lee Sexton

Hailing from the tiny town of Magaliesburg, just outside of Johannesburg, Jamie-Lee Sexton started singing and writing her own music at the tender age of 4 years old.

Her powerful vocals and mosaic of musical talents are a progressive product of her pursuit of music from her childhood. Playing guitar and piano since her adolescence, Jamie-Lee was always destined for something greater than what the small town she grew up in could offer. She pursued a career in music and drama by enrolling at AFDA in Johannesburg.

Majoring in live performance, Jamie-Lee has appeared in an array of celebrated films and won Best Actress at her university twice. From studio to jam sessions at various venues, Jamie-Lee is a voracious and versatile artist, displaying her drive, talent, passion, dynamism, and dedication to her craft.

With music encased in every beat of her body, she entered Idols in 2010 and made it to the prestigious Top 8. Although Jamie-Lee is a multifaceted artist and able to perform an assortment of genres, her signature sound is a mélange of new age pop.

After Idols, Jamie-Lee collaborated with Soul Candi’s DJ Parkah, and they were known as Audiophreniq, a fusion between afro house, soul, and hip-hop. They performed around South Africa. Jamie-Lee then founded The Sextons in 2013, an energetic live act that captured audiences at some of South Africa’s and Africa’s best music festivals, including Oppikoppi, FORR (in Mozambique), Splashy Fen, Afriski (in Lesotho), and more. The Sextons fast-tracked their way into the hearts of all music lovers.

In 2017, Jamie-Lee Sexton decided to rebrand herself and pursue her career as a solo artist, focusing on her own songwriting experiences and sharing them with the world. This newfound direction was about reinventing herself as an artist with a renewed energy and vision, a greater understanding of connection, and the creation of a three-dimensional future in music.

Her debut single, “Magic,” was reminiscent of the magic that Jamie-Lee believed in as a child. Mesmerizing audiences with her music, this song was produced by SAMA Award-winning producer Crighton Goodwill. This was the echelon that Jamie-Lee envisioned for her solo career and was followed by a successful national tour around South Africa.

Jamie-Lee Sexton then took the time to endure the creative space of writing and developing new melodies to introduce to the world and give the writing process the opportunity to develop. Her first single, “It’s True,” off her EP “Medicine Woman,” which was released in 2022, was a collection of self-expression and creativity. Jamie-Lee said, “I needed to live a little, to have something to write about.”

Thereafter, Jamie-Lee released four other singles from the same EP, which all achieved great success on radio charts. The EP debuted at number 1 on Apple Music. These songs are in a league of their own with refreshing melodies, instrumental hooks, and a touch of 80s and 90s pop revival. Bursting with moving beats and catchy riffs, these songs are like melodic earworms that are bound to have you humming along long after the song has ended.

With her signature raspy vocals and smooth tones that shine through in the tracks, all the songs are written with powerful and cleverly composed lyrics and compositions by Jamie-Lee Sexton herself. Combined with multi-platinum selling producer Daniel Baron’s vision, this creates a sonic firework display to put on repeat.

Since the EP release, Jamie-Lee has been nominated for two prestigious awards: Basadi in Music Awards 2022 – Pop Artist of the Year & Songwriter of the Year. Currently in the studio, Jamie-Lee Sexton will be releasing her new body of work this year, and you can expect an album filled with her exciting new vision and stories, keeping true to her signature sound.
