SABC to play 90% local SA Music from tomorrow

It seems that South African artists will be receiving the attention they deserve from tomorrow when  the SABC will be implementing 90% of local music across 18 of their radio stations. Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the SABC’s Chief Operations Officer, announced this in a statement earlier today.

“The SABC has taken a radical decision about its local content offering across all its radio, television and digital platforms. It is in this context that the decision on local music will ensure that the SABC fully reflects the various styles of local music on offer. Our respective radio stations will not be confined to playing local music which is language specific, we want to come to a point where any of our 18 radio stations can become a home for all South Africans. This cross-pollination of music is very important for the public service broadcaster, because part of our mandate is to reflect the South African story and music is an important part in ensuring that the SABC fulfills this mandate,” said Motsoeneng.

In case you were wondering, the following stations are part of the SABC: 5FM, Radio 2000, RSG, SAFM, Lotus FM, Metro FM, Ukhozi FM, Good Hope FM, TruFM, Lesedi FM, Ligwala Gwala FM, Thobela FM and others.

The report stated that all music genres – with a focus on kwaito, jazz, reggae, and gospel – will be played. In addition the SABC will play more music from legends in the SA Music industry as well as up-and-coming artists.

The move is part of a three-month trial to “assess the reception of the public”, before the final percentage of local music which must be played is decided. The SABC will engage its audiences to evaluate whether they are satisfied with these changes. This process will pave the way for the corporation to make an informed decision going forward.

I’m glad about this, but I’m curious at the same time and I’m wondering how much attention will be given to the rock, indie and pop genres. I guess only time will tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
