South African-born indie artist Meelu steps into a powerful new chapter with the release of her latest single, “Candlelight”. The track feels both intimate and transformative, blending heartfelt folk storytelling with atmospheric, beat-driven textures that signal a defining moment in her artistic evolution.
Written in Mykonos while overlooking the ocean, “Candlelight” emerged during a deeply emotional period following the passing of her grandmother, affectionately known as her “Oumi.”

A former South Africa national archery team archer and Meelu’s childhood archery coach, her grandmother played a central role in shaping both her life and her creative journey.
A Song Born From Grief and Reflection
The loss left Meelu navigating grief and struggling to find her footing in a world that suddenly felt different. Over time, however, her perspective began to shift. She came to understand that those we lose would want us to continue living fully and celebrating their lives.
That realisation became the emotional core of “Candlelight”, inspired by her grandmother’s chosen gravestone message: “I am not leaving you, I am just going before you.”
At its heart, the song explores the tension between holding on and learning to let go with love. Through poetic lyricism and a deeply vulnerable vocal performance, Meelu captures the emotional weight of goodbye while holding onto connection and memory.
Balancing Emotion With Musical Lift
While “Candlelight” is rooted in grief, the track carries an underlying sense of movement and light. Built on gentle acoustic layers, ambient textures, celebratory backing vocals, and horn accents, the song gradually opens up into something uplifting rather than heavy.
Subtle drum-and-bass-inspired live rhythms add momentum, reflecting the idea of carrying loved ones with us while continuing to move forward in life. The repeated bridge phrase, “figure it out, picture it now,” acts as a reassuring echo, inspired by her grandmother’s constant encouragement that everything would eventually be okay.
Influences That Shape Her Sound
Meelu’s sonic direction draws inspiration from a range of modern folk and indie artists known for emotional storytelling and textured production. Influences such as Phoebe Bridgers, Maggie Rogers, Gracie Abrams, Adrianne Lenker, Lizzy McAlpine, Bon Iver, Noah Kahan, and Ben Howard can be heard in the emotional depth and layered textures of her work.
Her sound sits comfortably at the intersection of raw vulnerability and modern folk production, allowing space for both storytelling and sonic experimentation.
Meelu is on a journey of Steady Growth
Meelu has been steadily building her presence in the music scene with a style defined by emotionally driven songwriting and immersive soundscapes. Early releases such as “Slowburner” introduced her to the South African indie audience, landing a spot on the SA Top 40 Indie Chart.
Momentum continued with her follow-up single “Hi, Love””, which climbed to the number-one position and gained international attention after being featured in the German Netflix film Mädchen Mädchen.
Her growing reputation has also led to performances at major events, including Y Not Festival, Splashy Fen, and The Great Escape. Along the way, she has shared stages with artists such as Jeremy Loops, GoodLuck, and Casey Lowery, while also achieving a sold-out debut headline show in London.
A Tribute to Love That Endures
With “Candlelight”, Meelu steps fully into her identity as an artist, creating music that invites listeners to feel deeply while gently guiding them toward healing and acceptance.
More than a reflection on loss, the song stands as a tribute to enduring love and connection. It highlights the importance of honouring those who have passed by continuing to live fully and carrying their memory forward.
“Candlelight” is not just a moment of vulnerability. It marks a turning point, one that shows Meelu embracing both her story and her sound with quiet confidence.
