Matt Shaw Releases Heartfelt Single: “Be Something Real”

Rising South African artist Matt Shaw is back with a heartfelt new release, “Be Something Real”. This emotional single follows the success of “Why Why Why,” which reached No. 4 on the Algoa FM Top 30. With this new track, Shaw continues to establish himself as one of the country’s most promising pop-folk storytellers.

Matt Shaw’s new single is a Story of Longing and Lost Love

At its heart, “Be Something Real” is a “one that got away” anthem—written from a place of deep longing and quiet hope.

Inspired by a real-life connection that flickered in and out of Matt’s life over several years, the song reflects on missed chances and emotional vulnerability.

“From the moment we met, it felt like this truly could have been something real,” says Matt. “But every time things start to look positive, we are ripped apart.”

    Collaboration with Sloani

This track also marks Matt’s first collaboration with producer Sloani. Working remotely between Gqeberha and Johannesburg, the duo managed to create something powerful and personal despite the physical distance.

“I was absolutely blown away by what Sloani sent me straight off the bat,” Matt says. “They took something that meant so much to me and made it even more special.” The two are already planning a follow-up single due later this year.

    Influences and Live Performances

Matt Shaw’s gift lies in his ability to channel vulnerability into music. Inspired by the likes of Noah Kahan, Benson Boone, Brendon Urie, and Will Linley, his sound mixes raw emotion with upbeat pop-folk energy. His songs speak to heartbreak, hope, and the journey in between.

Having performed alongside acts like Roan Ash, Will Linley, and Jeremy Loops, Matt continues to win fans with his sincere lyrics and captivating stage presence.

Performing “Be Something Real” for the first time was a pivotal moment for him: “It was the first time I truly believed I could make a career out of music,” he shares.

“Be Something Real” is a Song for the Hopeless Romantics

With “Be Something Real”, Matt Shaw invites listeners to connect with feelings of love, loss, and the fragility of human connection. And who knows—maybe one day, someone will propose during a performance of this song. “That’s the dream,” Matt says with a smile.
