Fresh from the release of his first solo single “This is the year”, Ben Dey has unveiled his next single “Somewhere Way Out West” as he makes an impeccable return to the folk sound that nurtured his musical beginnings. The single was released on Friday the 20th of November 2020.
Ben Dey is best known as the front man of SA rock band Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions. While the national lockdown halted the band’s ability to get together for practices and performances, it did not impede the creative side for Dey who continued writing songs as he normally would.
Dey soon realized that the new lockdown-era songs he was making, sounded different to those created with the band. What he had accidently done, was start a new project. While BDCL remains Dey’s first love as he continues playing in the band, he now also enjoys a separate solo musical endeavor.
Ben Dey explains the inspiration for “Somewhere Way Out West”
“South Africa’s natural landscapes have always evoked comparison to the good ol’ Wild West for me. I kind of wanted to create something that speaks true to my appreciations of the land.”
“Somewhere Way Out West” is a song that will take you to the campfire, out in the wild. Acoustic guitar, harmonica and a vocal purposed only for story are the main elements used and are diagnostic markers for the artist’s new solo journey.
“Somewhere Way Out West” was recorded at Sunset Studios in Franschhoek and is out now across all digital platforms. Stream / download it HERE.
